No doubt, Rebecca Leighton had a birth date very close to the date of Rebecca Hartwell's, and there is sufficient confusion over the dates for both of these women that either could have had this birth date. The confusion over these two women requires some research in original documentation to sort it out. Some researchers put the date and place as 14 Feb 1682 in Concord, others a year later in Littleton, MA. She died on 9 March 1776 at the age of 94 in Concord, Middlesex, MA.<sup><a href="sources.htm#23" class="lnk">23</a>,<a href="sources.htm#52481" class="lnk">52481</a>,<a href="sources.htm#52482" class="lnk">52482</a>,<a href="sources.htm#52483" class="lnk">52483</a>,<a href="sources.htm#52484" class="lnk">52484</a></sup> Buried in Oldest Cemetery, Concord, MA. Her gravestone is inscribed "Here Lies the Body of Mrs Rebekah Temple, Formerly the wife of Mr Simeon Hayward, who departed this life<br>March 29th D. 1776, In 94th year of her age. The memory of ye truly is blest." The 29 Mar date is also associated with Rebecca Hartwell, not Rebecca Leighton. The DAR genealogies show Simon Hayward as the first husband of Rebecca Hartwell, not Rebecca Leighton. The 23 Oct 1705 marriage date is attached to their marriage. It seems most likely that the 1705 date actually is the marriage of Rebecca to Simon Haywood, the latter died in 1719.<p>Rebecca was possibly Rebecca Hartwell, daughter of Samuel and Ruth (Wheeler) Hartwell, born 14 Feb 1682/3 in Littleton, MA. The DAR genealogies give Samuel's wife as Ruth Hosmer. Other alternatives exist, however. Some sources list Rebecca as the daughter of John Hartwell. This, however, seems to be a confusion with Rebecca Leighton (who married a Hartwell). The dates of the marriages of Rebecca Hartwell to an unnamed TEMPLE agree on 23 October 1705. The DAR genealogies show Simeon Hayward as the first husband of Rebecca Hartwell, not Rebecca Leighton. The 23 Oct 1705 marriage date is attached to their marriage as well. It seems most likely that the 1705 date actually is the marriage of Rebecca to Simon Haywood, the latter died in 1719. The marriage of Rebecca Leighton to Richard Temple in 1734 seems very solid.<p>To further complicate things, some research indicates this Rebecca Hartwell actually married Benjamin Temple. If the latter is true, it would have Rebecca marrying Benjamin as a first wife - but at a time when they might actually have married.</p><p>Spouse: <a href="b958.htm#P13437" class="lnk">Simeon HAYWOOD-13437</a>.
