Said to be a man of considerable intelligence despite his not having finished grade school. He had a favorite remark, "Knowledge never went to school." A self-made man, started his career as an electrical<br>engineer, having learned his trade through correspondence schools. While he was working on a substation someone pulled a switch and as a result he lost two fingers. He was sent to the Augusta General Hospital and while there fell in love with his nurse who happened to be none other than Nancy Williams Temple.<p>Shortly after they were married, they moved to many states as Jacques' work dictated. On 6 June 1924 they bought a farm in North Manchester, and returned to Maine. Before his turkey business was in full production, he sold lumber from his wood lots and cultivated much of the farm. Then in 1927, he started the Jacques' turkey Ranch, an<br>enterprise which made him well known throughout the state.<p>This farm, which was the largest of its kind in Maine, had the largest hatchery in New England. In addition to producing great numbers of turkeys for Thanksgiving and Christmas, he sold breeding stock, roasted turkeys, carved turkeys and canned turkeys. After his death, his wife made turkey pies which eventually replaced many of the other<br>operations of the farm.<p>At times, he sold as many as 2500 turkeys annually. They had started with three, and over a period of 36 years produced over a million.
