Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS) works in the following way:-

Air is drawn into the unit, where it is ionised by a weak
radioactive source. The molecules of certain types of agent vapours are
characterised by their ability to form low-mobility ionic clusters. These
ionic clusters are then further classified according to their mobility
relative to a known vapour source.

The level of toxic hazard is assessed by an on-board micro
computer and indicated on a display or an alarm depending upon the product.

This technology enables specific chemicals to be monitored
at very low levels, whether found at isolated ground locations or present
in the general atmosphere. It also discriminates against other vapours
likely to be found in battlefield situations.

IMS has already gained a good reputation as a technique
able to detect very low levels of toxic vapours. It provides many possibilities
for analysis in varied fields, in particular, for continuous emission monitoring
and ambient air monitoring of hazardous air pollutants.
