<title>Roadmap for Mid-East Peace Leads to a Dead End by Douglas Lang, AIPPC.ORG</title>

Leads to Dead End":</font></font></b>

never substitute for honest brokering</font></font></b>

<p><font size=-1>Even a cursory reflection of the plight of this troubled
region implores us to <i>take history into account</i>. Simple assumptions,
as those which prevailed in Iraq and lead to Shia uprisings, are grossly
out of place here. Realistic appraisals on the ground force us to admit
the limitations from the outset, when both parties are entrenched in long
held positions and suffer each others' various injustices.</font>
<p><font size=-1>Geography might be instructive; some maps even indicate
the obvious, which is that this hot, dry land is not the middle east, but
North Africa, and its influence there, religion aside, is potentially greater,
challenging Libya and Nigeria and South Africa for dominance on the continent
as it lurches toward greatness over the century.</font>
<p><font size=-1>A potential free-trade alliance between The Lebanon, Egypt,
Palestine, Israel, Syria and Jordan could rival other regions where only
oil dollars help maintain influence.</font>
<p><font size=-1>So where does the plan for gradual resumption of relations
through successful implimentation of numerous "Baby Steps" fall short?
Because, at its core, this plan calls for Palestinians to aqcuiesce, after
so many years of torment and deprivation, and accept a vastly reduced homeland,
limited it might be said, to the corner they find themselves "painted into."</font>
<p><font size=-1>This sliver of land, deprived of natural resources, comprises
a reported 22% of historic Palestinian lands, but can be said to be 97%
of the West Bank and Gaza, which spun slowly, sounds generous.</font>
<p><font size=-1>In the end, neither party will be satisfied, as settlers
movements will violently resist being decommissioned and extremist elements
on both sides will not see "land for peace" as a viable solution.</font>
<p><font size=-1>Only the boldest stroke will work, catching all parties
off guard, forcing painful confrontation-within each others' community-as
to the extent each other truly wants a peaceful resolution to the conflict.</font>
<p><font size=-1>Currently, Israel has responded by implementing harsh
and extreme measures, from targeted assassinations, to housing demolition,
to curfews, to roadblocks to killing outsiders (including journalists and
peace activists), to withholding payments, siphoning water, restricting
movements of officials and cutting off employment for day workers.</font>
<p><font size=-1>Equally outrageous, Hamas, Islamic Jihad and Hezbollah
continue to target Israeli civilians, wreaking havoc among a vulnerable
population, themselves lower middle class, destined to travel buses on
routes to and from work, unlike their wealthier compatriots less vulnerable
as they drive their private cars.</font>
<p><font size=-1>At its essence, this conflict resolves itself on the premise
that <b>"both parties desire the same territory." </b>Physics would indicate
that this proposition is not tenable... UNLESS! Unless both people were
finally prepared to share the same land and its resources.</font>
<p><font size=-1>The <b><a href="http://www.hightechnologyintl.com/ufip.html">UNITED
FEDERATION of ISRAEL and PALESTINE</a> </b>is no less viable an alternative
to one in which an arbitrary <font color="#006600">"Green Line" </font><font color="#000000">dictates
which child will be raised healthy and free and which will be raised poor
and defeated.</font></font>
<p><font color="#000000"><font size=-1>No Road map for Peace can be successful
without accounting for the rightful expectations of the inhabitants it
intends to speak to. Our proposal directs itself to the security concerns
of Israelis and the humility and dignity of Palestinians.</font></font>
