<h1>Radio & Radar Engineering</h1>
<p>
Radio and radar engineering is our traditional area of R&D and expertise. Our strong experience with and knowledge of signal processing, electromagnetics, and environmental effects are manifested in these radio and radar engineering research and products. We have pioneered the use of software radio in radio and radar engineering since our inception in 1985. These software radio technologies have been used to develop several communication, radar, EW, and navigational systems.

We have been involved with some of the largest of national and international radar systems, particularly those that aid environmental research. We are involved with the largest radar in the world (Arecibo, 1000 ft. diameter). We are currently developing some of the advanced radar controllers and software readers for other large systems. We have also developed a three-frequency dual-polarization rain-measuring radar for NASA.

CRS is active in several areas of communication. In the 1990s, we developed one of the first high-data-rate HF/VHF communication systems (at 64 Kbps).
<br><br>
Our knowledge of radio propagation, under diverse conditions and covering a frequency range of ELF to mm waves, is used for several radio engineering products and services. These include radio ray tracing in and through the atmosphere and the ionosphere. The effects of rain, the troposphere, and the ionosphere on the amplitude, phase, and scintillation of radio waves for various frequencies are modeled. Communication, radar, EW, and navigational systems are developed. Our expertise includes digital communication, satellite communication, adaptive system design, new communication, and radar system architecture.

Our strong experience in radio and radar engineering, combined with our traditional strengths in radio and ionosphere, resulted in the development of a modern HF sounder for ionospheric modeling. Similarly, we developed a prototype topside sounder supported by ONR. Several advanced receivers for upcoming satellite beacons are under development. Modeling of the environment, channel simulation, and observing environmental effects of the troposphere, ionosphere, and clutter are some of the areas of our expertise.

Currently we are supported by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for improving radar diagnostic capabilities using HF.
<br><br>
Although we have a wide array of products for software radio development, we are constantly improving the software system and real-time implementation schemes. We are adapting the system and extending its application to diverse areas of communication, navigation, and surveillance applications.
<br><br>
Some of these efforts have been productized and others are being transitioned into innovative products. These efforts have been supported by AFRL (Hanscom AFB, WPAFB, Edwards AFB, Eglin AFB, MDA, U.S. Army), ONR, SPAWAR, NRL, CECOM, NSF, NASA, NavAir, and others.
