... Blooming Glen Road, Perkasie... many a youthful day spent fishing, ice skating and exploring the Branch Creek, around and beneath this bridge.<BR>
Merel Bryan's farm was to the west (to your right, in this view).<BR>

Mood's Covered Bridge was built in 1874 and in 1980, the bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places.<BR> In 1997, PennDOT spent $277,000 on a major structural restoration of the bridge. <BR>

... At 1:00 in the afternoon, January 21, 2004... Roben Jones of Philadelphia, driving a Browning Ferris Industries (BFI) trash truck,<BR>
illegally drove... no, tore through this wonderful old covered bridge, ripped off the front overhead face and snapped through 8 of the 12 overhead trusses.<BR>
The truck was 12 feet, 7 inches high... bridge clearance "was" 11 feet, 2 inches. At that time, all trucks were banned from crossing the bridge.<BR>
The driver was cited for "motor carrier violations".<BR>
The bridge was still standing, but now structuraly unsafe and closed. Repairs were scheduled to begin on June 28th.<BR>

... but wait... it get's better... just 6 days before reconstruction is to begin...<BR>
<BR>
... June 22, 2004, in the early morning hours... between 3:30 and 4:00 a.m., under cover of darkness... six malignant, brain dead miscreants set fire to the bridge... TWICE ! ! !<BR> ... completely destroying it. Their first attempt wasn't good enough... thay had to leave, find more accelerant, return and reset their fire. Premeditated ? <BR>

... all were local to this area, students at Penn State at the time, and home for a little fun and destruction.<BR>
Of course, the new bridge is just a reproduction and no longer worthy of the Historic Register... and these perpetrators have no doubt become "upstanding" citizens.<BR>
