... the tapered square, 30-foot tall tower with its unique, cantilevered light room, displaying 3 oil fueled lamps is the original portion of the 1855 construction of the Fort Point Lighthouse. Attached additions for larger keeper's quarters and storage were added in 1878. The light was electrified, automated and upgraded with a 6th Order Fresnel lens in 1951. In 1989 the light was decommissioned by the goverment and scheduled for demolition. However, the townspeople of Liverpool objected and took possession of the light and property in 1970, preserving and refurbishing the structure and establishing the Fort Point Lighthouse Park. The Lighthouse is now declared a Provincial Heritage Property and open to visitors on a seasonal schedule.
