... the Borden Flats Lighthouse sits in the middle of Mount Hope Bay, where the Taunton River empties into that bay. In 1881, a concrete fill, iron caisson was sunk to the bottom, with an iron, "spark plug" type tower, housing a fifth order red lamp, erected 50 feet above sea level... warning navigators to the danger of submerged rocks in their path. In 1932 the light was upgraded to a 4th order Fresnel Lens and changed to a flashing white light. In 1938, a second caisson was constructed, surrounding the original, following a bit of structural destabilization, suffered during a severe hurricane. The light was automated in 1963 and upgraded again in 1977. The light was decommissioned in 2006 and then sold in 2008. The Borden Flats Light remains an active luminary and presently offers a <A HREF="http://www.bordenflats.com/">"Light Keeper's Overnight Rental Program"</A> for those persons wishing a more relaxed version of a lighthouse keeper's experience.
