... located on the southern tip of Barn Marsh Island, on the Bay of Fundy, is the site of the first tapered, square (4 sided) light tower built in New Brunswick. Cape Enrage is an extremely hazardous area for navigation as a submerged rock spur extends nearly half way into Chignecto Bay. The 39-foot tall tower was activated in 1840 and presented a light, 161 feet above the bay. The original light tower was relaced in 1870 and converted to a keepers house. In 1874 a fog horn building was added to the site. That new lighthouse was struck by lightening in 1876. A 3rd lighthouse, the current tower, also of a tapered square design, was erected at 29-feet above the cliff, with a fourth-order Fresnel lens. In 1952 a substantial, duplex, keeper's residence was finally built for the resident personel and the earlier, cramped, old tower living quaters, eliminated. However, by 1988 the station was automated and the keepers were dismissed. Following an announcement that the keeper's residence was to be demolished, concerned citizen, Dennison Tate led a movement to restore the structure and turn it into a youth oriented, adventure program <A HREF="https://www.tourismnewbrunswick.ca/Products/C/Cape-Enrage.aspx"> (Cape Enrage Adventures)</A> and with the help of the Province of New Brunswick and the Albert County Heritage Trust, the light station was purchased from the Canadian Coast Guard and the site is now the Cape Enrage Interpretive Centre. Visiting one early morning in October of 2016... my son & I watched a pair of lads practice their rappelling skills... quite impressive... an amazing place.
