... alongside the South Beltline Highway... alongside the Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) double main; carrying unit coal trains through Scottsbluff, Nebraska... alongside four holding tracks lined with hopper cars... BNSF #2028 drills a few boxcars on the turnout into the Southwest Hide Company siding. BNSF #2028 is a General Motors, Electro-Motive Division (EMD) GP38-2, Road Switcher... one of 2,222 units manufactured between 1972 & 1986. The dash 2 is an upgrade to the earlier GP38, 2,000-hp, 1.5-megawatt, supercharged V16 cylinder, diesel electric locomotive. 2028 was built for Penn Central (PC) as #7704, went through CONRAIL (CR), Norfolk Southern (NS) and the National Railway Equipment Company (NREX)... then acquired, rebuilt and repainted to match BNSF livery in 2006. This Burlington Northern (BN) Caboose #12186, has been in the Scottsbluff yard, at least since I observed it in November of 2016. It was sitting at the far end of the tanning & leather company's siding at the time and was spotted, as of late 2017, on one of the four siding tracks next to the main line. The caboose is in very good condition & I'm told it entered rehab and received refreshment on site. 12186 does not appear to be this caboose's original Burlington Northern roster number... it may be a relatively recent reactivation rebuild, sequentially renumbered forward, for BNSF. I don't know... and I'm not aware of how it's being deployed now.
