... the Heart of Georgia Railroad (HOG) was formed in 1999 to operate over former Chessie Seaboard Xpress (CSXT) ex- Seaboard Air Line Railroad (SAL) ex- Savannah, Americus & Montgomery (SAM) ex- Americus, Preston & Lumpkin trackage. Beginning in 2000, the HOG acquired additional, regional short line routes, increasing its coverage to 219 miles. On a road trip, June of 2017, I happened upon HOG GP40 #1740 & leased NREX GP10 #1403 lashed up with 8 loads of lumber & one lone tank car, momentarily held at the little train station in Plains, Georgia. I took a few photos and watched her leave. This is the former Seaboard depot that served as headquarters for the Jimmy Carter Presidential Campaign of 1976. The 1888 wooden structure is preserved as it was during the campaign and serves as a modest museum, although rail along side the freight platform has been removed and a siding and passenger boarding platform have been added north of the single main track. A coordinated enterprise between a reconstituted SAM, the Georgia Department of Transportation, the Southwest Georgia Railroad Excursion Authority & the HOG, which supplies the crewed locomotive power... operates an excursion rail trip between the Carter Homestead at Archer and the Cordele intermodal rail yard, to the east. Illustrated, this particular GP40 #1540, sports an extended slant-roof, sheltering the inertial grill behind the cab... which I find interesting and somewhat unique... although the Wellsboro & Corning Railroad (WCOR) SD-40-2's also have them. These hoods are Canadian, snow shield, service modifications. The 1540 is a former Canadian National (CN #4007) EMD locomotive, built in 1966. The Genesee & Wyoming Railroad (GNWR) acquired the Heart of Georgia Railroad in 2017.
