... the Sullivan's Island Light, also known as Charleston Lighthouse, was turned on with twenty-eight million candlepower of light in 1962. It is a modern, concrete, steel & aluminum, triangular tube, 163 feet tall... complete with an interior elevator. The tower was designed by Jack Graham, a 1957 graduate of the School of Architecture under Louis Kahn at the University of Pennsylvania. The Charleston Light sits to the north of Charleston Harbor and serves as a replacement and auxiliary for the old <A HREF="jmas188.html"> Morris Island Lighthouse</A> which is located south of the harbor entrance. Ownership & maintenance of the Charleston Light was transferred from the Coast Guard to the National Park Service in 2008 and the facility is rarely open to the public. It stands as the brightest and last, stalwart lighthouse built by in the United States by the Federal Government.
