... the Reading Blue Mountain & Northern Railroad (RBMN), created in 1983 as the Blue Mountain and Reading Railroad, is heir to the fallen flags of several northeast Pennsylvania heritage anthracite railroads. Acquiring and running on right-of-ways & former CONRAIL (CR) branches of the Reading (RDG), Lehigh Valley (LV) and Central New Jersey (CNJ) railroads, the RBMN, a Class II railroad, provides heavy rail service connecting with Norfolk Southern (NS) between Reading, Pennsylvania on the south, to the Mehoopany and Taylor Interchanges to the north... and Mt. Carmel and Lehighton interchange, to the west and east, respectively... with additional subs throughout the center. In 1995, the Reading Blue Mountain & Northern relocated it's corporate offices and maintenance yard operations to the site of the former Little Schuylkill Navigation, Railroad and Coal Company's (LSRR) Port Clinton Station (which merged with the Reading Railroad (RDG) in 1952). In addition to revenue freight service, the Reading Northern provides the power and coaches for the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway (LGSRY) excursions, departing Jim Thorpe, PA.
... illustrated... the Port Clinton facility with RBMN #5049, an EMD SD50M, one of five SD50's... and RBMN #2530, one of six beautiful GP39RN's (rebuilt GP30s). Further back at the engine house, RBMN #1542, an EMD MP15 receives service. Reading Northern also rosters nine SD40-2's, close to a dozen and a half various shifters, three RDC's, a pair of vintage F7A's (ex Bessemer and Lake Erie) at the very beginning of their restorations, and two steam engines... #425, an ex Canadian Pacific (CP) 2-6-0 Baldwin (operating) and the venerable Reading Company T-1, 4-8-4 #2102... currently undergoing a rebuild for recertification. And... next to the train station offices, under the train shed, rests RBMN #4... an ex-Milwaukee Road, 1952 Pullman-Standard Super Dome passenger car.
