... the Baldwin Locomotive Works was founded in Philadelphia by Matthias W. Baldwin in 1832, with the fabrication of a steam engined locomotive for the Philadelphia, Germantown and Norristown Railroad. By 1923 business was good and Baldwin moved to larger facilities in Eddystone, PA. Baldwin's 2-6-6-2 articulated Mallet type, coal fired steam locomotive was built from 1911 until 1949 for the Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) Railroad. Two have survived. #1308 is on display at the Collis P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society in West Virginia... and #1309, the last steam locomotive produced by Baldwin before their changeover to the diesel, internal combustion engine, was quietly resting at the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum in Maryland. In 2014, #1309... coincidentally the last of 9 of the type built for the C&O... was transferred to the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad (WMSR) for restoration and a return to active duty. Although the 2-6-6-2's primary assignment had been to power heavy coal drags through Kentucky and West Virginia, the 1309 is hoped to return to revenue service at the head of the WMSR heritage line, hauling passenger excursions some time in 2019. A clearly illustrated explanation of a Mallet Articulated Locomotive may be found at the Catskill Archive.

... around 1906, as the Western Maryland Railroad (WM) laid track for a more gradual, graded ascent over the Allegheny Mountains, it created a pair of back to back, horseshoe curves climbing out of Cumberland, Maryland. In the process, the Western Maryland roadbed wrapped its way through and around a generational farm owned by the Helmstetter family. In the ensuing years... Helmstetter's Curve became a favored location for railroad run-by photography. In 2010, their iconic red barn burned to the ground. Through the efforts of generous rail fans and "Trains" magazine, funds were raised to help the Helmstetter family build a new barn... thereby restoring that scenic tableau for future photo opportunities.
