... I managed to time my visits to the North Cape, New London and Rustico lighthouses to coincide with the tail end of Hurricane Matthew, which caused extensive damage over neighboring Cape Breton Island on October 10th of 2016. My timing was not intentional and it was not this cheery looking. However, as I slogged through the flooded grassland and a side-ways torrent of wind and rain, I could not help but marvel at how well the slender, convex tapered walls of this lighthouse just shrugged off the storm. The aerodynamics at work around the building were completley apparent in the atmospheric mix. The 43-1/2 foot tower and house was first lit in 1876. A second smaller tower was built in alignment with and below... in 1879. Following a devastating storm in 1891, this original lighthouse, now known as the rear range light... & what could be salvaged off the newer front range light, were relocated a couple hundred feet to the south to a location of better visibility. The tower suffered fire damage and was repaired in 1894. In the winter of 1902 the channel completely shifted away from the light... only to return in 1904 to its previous course. In 1958 the light was electrified and automated. I didn't see a front range light, although I didn't hunt real hard at the time and it may be gone.
