... the Selkirk lighthouse was constructed of local stone and the iron railing, forming the birdcage lantern, was built by local blacksmith John Box, at the mouth of the Salmon River on Lake Ontario near Pulaski, New York in 1838. Supposedly, there are only four lighthouses with birdcage type lantern rooms left in the US... though the little <A HREF="/jmas153.html"> Stony Point</A>, NY lighthouse has one and isn't included on that list. Selkirk Lighthouse was originally lit by 8 whale oil lamps until it's deactivation in 1858... but then... the light was reactivated in 1989 with a solar powered light. Next to the lighthouse once sat the old Selkirk Hotel (illustrated), which has been removed since my visit. Old photos and postcards show this area as being a pretty neat little harbor village. The property is a part of the adjacent Salmon River Marina and when I visited, it had just been acquired by new owners. The lighthouse has since been renovated and is presently advertised as available for overnight rentals. Here is another view of the <A HREF="/jmas405.html"> Selkirk Lighthouse from the north.</A><BR>
