... the Cape Bear Lighthouse was constructed as a 40 foot tall, square, tapered tower in 1881. An extended keeper's home was added in 1899 and the entire facility was moved and relocated inland in 1947 due to creeping erosion along the shoreline. In 1960, the keeper's house was sold, removed from the tower and moved a quarter mile down the path to become a private residence. In 2011, the light was decommisioned and replaced by a steel, skeletal tower. And then... in 2013 and 2014, the old wooden tower and facilities were picked up and moved inland again, aprroximately 500 feet, to further escape erosion and facilitate it's restortation and preservation as a historic structure. The Cape Bear Marconi Station picked up the first distress signal sent from the sinking "RMS Titanic" on April 14, 1912.<BR> This is how the Cape Bear Lighthouse looked to me during a visit in 2012. <BR>
