... This ALCO PA-1 was built in 1948 for the Santa Fe Railroad (ATSF) as #62-L to power the "Super Chief" between Chicago and Los Angeles as well as the "San Diegan" between LA and San Diego. It was rebuilt by Morrison-Knudson and in 1975 as D&H #18... a PA-4 upgrade for the Delaware and Hudson Railroad (DH). In 1978 it was sold to Ferrocarriles Nacionales de Mexico (N de M)... and eventually wrecked. Doyle L. McCormack a retired Union Pacific engineer and president of the Oregon Rail Heritage Center, bought this engine in 2000, brought it back to the United States and began a long restoration in 2002... choosing to replicate the original Nickel Plate Road (NKP) #190 he first rode in. The Nickle Plate Road (New York Chicago & St Louis Railroad) at one time had eleven of these V16 turbocharged, 2,000 horsepower, diesel electric locomotives, numbers 180 through 190, none of which have survived. Of the 169 PA-1's built by ALCO... 5 units remain, 2 of which reside in the US. NKP #190, repowered with a Montreal Locomotive Works, 251 V12... is illustrated along side Iowa Pacific (IPH) EMD E8 #515... May 31, 2014, at Spencer, North Carolina. Iowa Pacific E8 #515 is one of a pair of Iowa Pacific Holdings' "Varsity" excursion power set... #515 and #518, based out of Bensenville, Illinois. 515 was originally built as Chicago & North Western (CNW) #2056A in 1953. <BR>
