... The New Orleans Public Belt (NOPB) is a unique railroad, in that it is publicly owned by the City of New Orleans and operates as a terminal switching railroad, serving the Port of New Orleans... with connections to six class 1 railroads... giving it inland access to all of North America. Operations began in 1908 on 20 miles of track with one steam locomotive. As of 2015, the NOPB operates three MP2000D's and three earlier model MP1500D's as well as an assortment of EMD SW 1500 switchers and GP40's. The Motive Power Industries MP2000D is a road switcher powered by a 1,900 hp turbocharged Caterpillar V12 engine, driving four GM D78B traction motors through a KATO generator. A total of seven of the MP2000D series locomotives were built between 1997 and 1999. General Motors, Electro-Motive Division acquired Motive Power Industries and the locomotive evolved into the EMD GP20D, powered by a Caterpillar V16 of 2,000 horsepower... with a production run of 40 units from 2000 until 2001. <BR>

NOPB MP2000D #2008 and NOPB SW1500 #1501 head up a mixed train of covered hoppers and box cars, westbound approaching St. Louis Street as Trolley #458, a circa 1920's Perley Thomas replica, rolls by in the opposite direction on the River Front Line through the French Quarter.<BR> </p>
