... The Union Pacific Railroad (UP) restored and maintains 3 EMD E9, streamlined, diesel electric locomotives.... numbers 949, 951 and 963B. These three locomotives, originally built in 1955 with twin V12 engines developing 2,400 horsepower, are the survivors of the Union Pacific Railroad's final, full roster of sixty nine E9 units. #949, #951 and #963B were upgraded, re-engined and modernized in 1993 and are now used by the UP for special events and excursions. I don't know when or why the original nose access hatch doors and grab bars were removed from #949 and #951. The 70 foot long E9 is the Electro-Motive Division (EMD) final derivative (ended 1964) of the classic streamlined series of cab diesels that began with General Motor's (GM), Electro-Motive Corporation (EMC) 1937 model EA.

... Union Pacific E9 #949 made the trip from the Union Pacific's Cheyenne heritage complex in Wyoming to attend the 2014 "Streamliners at Spencer" gathering in North Carolina. UP #949 participated over the four day event, as one end of the push-pull power for passenger photo-op runs on the trackage within the Spencer Shops yard limits.
