... The Union Station and Train Shed in Nashville, Tennessee, were constructed in the 1890s by the Louisville and Nashville (L&N) Railroad.
The station was designed by L&N engineer Richard Montfort and modeled after H.H. Richardson's design for the Alleghany County Courthouse in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Nashville Train Shed at the time was the longest single-span, gable roof structure in the United States. Between 1975 and 1979 the station was decommissioned and in 1986 it reopened as the Union Station Hotel. In 1996, both the hotel and the train shed were damaged by fire and subsequently the train shed was determined to be structurally unsound and demolished. That area is presently a surface parking lot. The Union Station Hotel has been restored and is open for business... and... the circus train came to town every January. The historic elephant walk from the Nashville railyard, down Demonbreun Street to the "Big Top" though... is over. At the end of April 2016, all of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus elephants are retired and living in Florida. And now... in January 2017... Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey has announced the Circus will cease all operations by the end of May, 2017. That's it... an iconic Circus and it's Special Train "RBBX"... is gone...
This watercolor was painted for a Bella Terra Maps publication.
