... Five of these Class EP-2 type Bipolar electric locomotives were built for the Milwaukee Road by General Electric Rail in 1919, eventually running under 650 miles of catenary track. Bipolar refers to the innovative and substantially improved mechanics of the day, of mounting two field pole, electric traction motors directly and gearlessly between the driving truck (axles) assemblies. The EP-2 has twelve motors in 12 sets of driver wheels, plus a pair of unpowered load-bearing wheels at each end. The entire chassis is articulated as well. The body consists of three hinged sections, two of which carry the pantographs and the frame is divided into four sections, which give it a flexible 3-4-4-3 stance. These 4,400 horsepower EP-2s were built exclusively for the Milwaukee Road Passenger Division and were hugely successful at their task, before being retired in 1961. This restored EP-2 is currently on static display at the Museum of Transportation in St. Louis, Missouri.
