... Nine of these polished, stainless steel clad, Electro-Motive Corporation (EMC-EMD) E5 diesel electric, cab unit, locomotives and three B units, powered by twin 12 cylinder, 567 cubic inch, supercharged engines, each developing 2,000 hp, were produced in 1940 and 1941 to pull the Burlington Route's stainless steel Zephyr series of passenger trains. A total of sixteen E5's were produced... eleven cab units and five as B unit boosters... with an A-B pair, each going to the Colorado & Southern Railway and the Fort Worth & Denver Railway. The last surviving EMC-EMD E5 diesel, #9911-A, named "Silver Pilot", currently heads the ex Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad (CBQ) Nebraska Zephyr train, owned and operated by the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, Illinois. This is the former Fort Worth & Denver unit.<BR>

I first painted 9911-A for<A HREF="http://www.bellaterramaps.com/rail_usa_central.html"> Bella Terra's RailUSA Maps</A> in 2013. Then in 2014, the "Silver Pilot" made the trip east to join the "Streamliners at Spencer" event in North Carolina and I got to see her up close and personal for several days. With a sharply raked nose similar to the earlier Atlantic Coast Line E3 "The Champion", which is a wrecked E3 rebuilt as an E6... the E4 (none existing) and the E6, of which 3 survive (when including the Champion)... The stainless steel E5 "Silver Pilot" is unique and absolutely stunning in brilliant sun light. Anyway... I had to paint her again... & this is watercolor #2.<BR>
