<p>San Francisco Cable Car Museum . Watercolor . 12" x 16" <BR>

... The San Francisco Cable Car Museum is built around the Washington - Mason Power House and Car Barn on Nob Hill. There are two<BR> viewing levels of the cable power apparatus... the upper level provides a look at the GE motors (originally steam powered engines) and 14 foot<BR> diameter spinning cable sheaves (grooved wheels) and the lower level provides access to the cables as they enter and exit through their respective<BR> channels beneath the streets... allowing the surface trolleys to be pulled along. Being an east coast lad, I was surprised to see the Philadelphia Gear<BR> nameplates on the reduction gear housings. These particular gears have been in continuous operation since their installation as part of a massive<BR> rehabilitation by the City... of the entire trolley cable system in 1982. This watercolor was painted for a <A HREF="http://www.bellaterramaps.com/rail_usa_western.html">Bella Terra Maps publication</A>.
