... around 1920, the Reading Railroad built this steel, box truss, pedestrian bridge in Sellersville, Pennsylvania, as a crossover its Philadelphia - Bethlehem trackage which divided the town, linking east and west Church Streets. This bridge was located about a 1000 feet north of the Sellersville Train Station and just south of the location of a bridge built 7 years later to carry Sellersville's Main Street, (old) Route 309, over these same railroad tracks. I made this plein air painting, on site at about two o'clock, in the morning of July 5, 1974. By 1981 this pedestrian bridge was declared structurally unsound and in 1986, demolished and hauled away. Interestingly... the 1927, Rt 309, Pont Truss vehicular bridge, built over the tracks just beyond it, was also declared structurally unsound and closed to traffic in February 2014... once again cutting the town in half... although temporary repairs to that bridge have allowed it to be reopened, pending a future replacement.<BR>
