... The ALCO RS-1 is a diesel-electric, road switcher locomotive, built by ALCO-GE between 1941 and 1953 and the American Locomotive Company (ALCO) from 1953 to 1960. The Rutland Railroad (RUT), in Vermont, owned numbers 400 through 405 before the Green Mountain Railroad (GMRC) acquired the line in 1964. Number 405 is the remaining RS-1 on the Green Mountain roster. The Fitchburg Railroad (FRR), which mainly served across Massachusetts beginning in 1840, branched north to Bellows Falls, building this stone arch bridge, known as the Fitchburg Bridge, to cross the Connecticut River, connecting Vermont with New Hampshire in 1899. The Fitchburg line was subsequently leased to the Boston & Maine Railroad (BM) in 1900. At some date following that acquisition, the bridge was reinforced with a series of vertical steel beams. Currently the Green Mountain Railroad operates on the track across this bridge.
