... from a sketch... this rather short and stumpy lighthouse, built in 1826 on top of a very high peninsula, is the oldest lighthouse along the Hudson River in New York. This overlook is also the site of the last major battle of the American Revolutionary War, fought on July 16, 1779, (Battle of Stony Point)... when General Anthony Wayne struck a heavily fortified British position at night overwheming the garrison.
On the 18th, the Americans abandoned the hill and 2 days later the British returned, but by then the British realized they could no longer hold it, or anything else for that matter...<BR> and soon gave up the notion that they could continue the war.<BR>
