ANY �WALKING DEAD� EMPLOYEES?</font></b><span style="font-size: 16.0pt"> </span></h2>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14.0pt"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Most
companies can find an employee or two that seem to be out to lunch all day.
Sometimes referred to as the �Walking Dead� these complacent workers come into
work every day, but contribute very little. They are never motivated to
go that extra mile. They don�t plan to leave the company even though the
company probably wouldn�t mind if they did. </font></span></p>
<p class="MsoBodyText2"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Some
HR Professionals also refer to this condition as �Presenteeism�, meaning that
even though at work, such employees are as much absent are they are present.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Jessica
Marquez with Workforce Management Inc. published a report on a recently completed
project by ISR that studied 10 countries to determine the extent of this condition.
Their study showed that 22% of all employees globally fall into this �Walking
Dead� category. The Project Director, Soni, Basi, who used the term �Complacent
Employees� for the purposes of the study, found that the U.S. worker had the
lowest rate with only 14% of their employees being complacent. France
ranked #1 with the highest percentage. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">This
may be because French workers have a different attitude toward work and how
employees feel about their jobs. Until very recently, France has had a
national 35-hour workweek and still has almost the longest vacation time among
the developed nations; French workers focus more on their personal lives.
They also rank very low on national productivity. American workers with
a 40 hour workweek and one of the shortest vacation times, are at the top of
the productivity list, second only to Australia. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">For
the purpose of the study, Basi listed three types of workers. The fully
engaged worker, the complacent worker and the disengaged, alienated worker.
The disengaged, alienated worker is usually going to leave and you will probably
not be able to save him. You need to be able to tell the difference between
the other two because almost all complacent workers can be saved. There
are some telltale signs according to Basi.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Fully
engaged workers tend to think about and focus their activities on the bigger
picture and what the company�s core values are. While complacent workers
are focused on the issues that directly affect their everyday lives. They
tend to see the world of work as it exists only in the visual sphere directly
around them. They are disconnected from the larger view, from the overall
purpose of all their activity. Basi says that Supervisors need to orient
them to that bigger picture and to link them to their role in that picture. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Complacent
workers do care. The surveys showed that meeting the customer�s needs
is important to them. However they seldom know what the customers feeling
are. They have no idea what the end result of their work actually is.
Basi says to get feedback from the customers and share it with employees.
That�s crucial. This works for both positive and negative feedback because
it gets the complacent employee engaged in the process. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Fully
engaged workers are already focused on the bigger picture, the end result they
seek. Complacent workers need to be linked to both.</font></p>

Health Care On The Way? Who�s Paying?</font></span></u></b>

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14.0pt"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Employers
may again be targeted to provide the solutions to society�s problems.
30 states are now considering bills that would require employers to
provide health care insurance to all employees or to pay into a state
fund that would manage and distribute the funds to provide that coverage
much like Social Security.</font></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Many
employers do not provide expensive benefits to employees who are seasonal,
short term, part time or work at very low skill jobs. Many employees
surrender their benefits for an equal amount on the paycheck.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">The
bills can be broken down into 3 types:</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: -.25in; margin-left: .5in">

</span>Some states like Massachusetts, are considering a bill as described
above, that would mandate that all employers must provide health care
insurance to all employees or to pay into a state fund.</font></p>

</span>Some would require all employers doing any business with the

California law that was killed in April, would have required every

World War II Christmas Gift </u></font></h3>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14.0pt"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">81
year old Nannelle Surrency Bacon during the last holiday season, told
friends of the Christmas of December 1944 during World War II.
Her employer, J. A. Jones Construction Co built freighters to carry
troops and supplies to the front lines. By December 23<sup>rd</sup>
they had made their quota of six ships completed. </font></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">But
someone in the workforce had the idea of building a seventh ship.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Getting
that seventh ship done meant working around the clock right through
Christmas day. Yet over 1500 workers volunteered.
Nanelle remembered the atmosphere of the plant that day. Someone
had cut a Christmas tree from the nearby woods and posted it on the
front gate. During breaks of crackers and Coca Cola the crews
sang Christmas hymns.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">The
sacrifice didn�t end there. When the paychecks and the overtime
came in, the employees signed their checks over to the U.S. Treasury
for the war effort. The company matched their gift for a total
of $32,160. </font></p>

made you feel like you had almost given your heart or your life� Bacon
said. �We were walking around hugging each other and patting
people on the back. It was a celebration� </font></p>

around the country carried the story calling the worker�s effort �A
