Americans in the workforce, particularly in the expanding, fast paced land care
industry, we take it for granted that we are always overstressed and out of
time.</font></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">�Time
is the stuff life is made of� was the message from Ben Franklin. He told
the world that you could get a lot more out of life with just a little time
management. And he proved it to be true. Does doing a better job,
being more productive at work and at home, getting things done in less time
and actually relieving much of that stress sound worthwhile? </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Then
here are 10 basic tips for starting down that scary road called �Time Management�.</font></p>
<h4><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">1. Find out where you�re
wasting time</font></h4>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14.0pt"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Do
you spend too much time web surfing, reading e-mail, making personal calls?
Try writing down or recording all your activities, everything, for a few days.
Then look for your time wasters.</font></span></p>
<h4 class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>2.
Create time management goals</b></font></h4>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Your
not changing time, your changing your habits. Set a goal for example,
to avoid taking any personal calls for one week, to reduce your web and e-mail
time down to 15 minutes. Identify the time wasters and target them as
your goals.</font></p>
<h4 class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>3.
Make a time management plan</b></font></h4>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">On
what jobs are you usually late? Set targets for completing the most important
jobs ahead of time. Track them to see how well you do and how to improve.</font></p>
<h4 class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>4.
Use time management tools</b></font></h4>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Use
a day-timer or a software program every day. Schedule events and schedule
the preparations needed for them as well. </font></p>
<h4 class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>5.
Prioritize ruthlessly!</b></font></h4>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">The
ability, judgment and willingness to prioritize can do more to change your life
then almost anything else you can do on your own. Many of us tend to do
the easiest jobs first and at the end of the day the important things are unfinished.
That is really stressful. Ask yourself, �What is the best use of my time
right now?� Not always doing what is urgent, but doing what is important.
Take the first 15 minutes of your morning to prioritize your day.</font></p>
<h4 class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>6.
Learn to delegate</b></font></h4>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Doing
it by yourself may be self-satisfying, but it usually means that you�re afraid
of losing control. Delegating and sharing the workload gets the job done
quicker, is more productive, creates teamwork, trains and develops others, usually
means the job is done better and is just plain good management.</font></p>
<h4 class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>7.
Establish regular routines and stick to them</b></font></h4>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Following
routines sounds monotonous, not much creativity and not much thinking to do.
But when you�re following a well-established job, that�s what you want.
You don�t want to have to rethink the same old processes every time. Turn
the no-brainers into real no-brainers. The longer you follow those routines,
the more efficient you will make them. What do you do now that can be
done better with a routine?</font></p>
<h4 class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>8.
Start a habit of setting time limits for tasks</b></font></h4>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Reading
e-mail and communications can eat up your entire day if you let it. Set
time limits on tasks as a challenge. Stick to your time limits including
the time you set for meetings. You�ll be surprised how much you were wasting
on those tasks.</font></p>
<h4 class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>9.
Organize your tools and resources.</b></font></h4>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Do
you waste a lot of time looking for files on your computer? Is your paper
filing system a jungle? Once and for all, make organizing these tools
and resources a task. Set a time limit and establish it as a routine.
Identify a logical place for all the things you use and take the time to put
them back in that place. It takes a lot less time to do that than to look
for them over and over every time you need them.</font></p>
<h4 class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"><b>10.
Don�t waste time waiting</b></font></h4>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">When
you�re waiting for a meeting to start, waiting in the Dentists office, or in
an airport, use that time. Carry a pad, start planning next weeks project,
do that pile of reading you�ve been stacking up. What�s the best use of
your time right now?</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">And
as for Americans being so overstressed, it may be just a time management problem.
In a recent study of over 6,000 businesses in 24 countries, each country was
ranked in their order of the stressfulness. The United States ranked 18<sup>th</sup>
of the 24. </font> </p>

How Did Your Day Go?</font></span></b></h3>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">The
Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has recently released the first of their
American Time Use Surveys (ATUS). Conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau,
this survey will be an ongoing, annual report identifying how Americans
spend their time each day.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">The
data are broken down by industry, geographical location, work, home and
many other categories. It is available by contacting ATUS at
<a href="mailto:[email protected]" style="color: blue; text-decoration: underline; text-underline: single">
[email protected]</a> . The Universities of Michigan and Maryland
have been conducting similar surveys since 1965. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">At
least 50 other counties are now, or soon will be, collecting the same
kind of data in a way that the information can be correlated and compared.
</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">From
this first report (for the year 2004) the following information was drawn:</font></p>
<ul style="margin-top: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in" type="disc">
<li class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">On
the days that they worked, men worked about 1 hour longer than women.
8.0 hours for men compared to 7.1 hours for women.</font></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Employed
women spent about one hour more a day doing housework than men. </font></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">On
days that they worked, about 1 in 5 people did some of their work at
home.</font></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Adults
without children spent about 1� hours more per day in leisure or sports
activities than adults with children.</font></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">55%
of women reported doing household work compared to 20% of men.
About 66% of those women reported doing food preparation or cleanup,
compared to 35% of men.</font></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">96%
of all participants reported some sort of leisure or sports activity
every day. Men spent 5.4 hours compared to women at 4.8 hours.</font></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Watching
TV was the #1 reported activity for both men and women. Socializing
was #2.</font></li>

Happen At Work Today?</font></span></b></h3>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">The
American Enterprise Institute (AEI) issued a report on worker satisfaction
in their jobs. Some of their findings:</font></p>
<ul style="margin-top: 0in; margin-bottom: 0in" type="disc">
<li class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Worker
satisfaction in the U.S. is high. Over 90% of the participants
said they were satisfied or somewhat satisfied with their jobs.
This figure has held pretty steady for over 25 years.</font></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">The
majority of workers say that they would take the same job again �without
hesitation�.</font></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">85%
said they have a strong sense of loyalty to the company they work for.</font></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">86%
are satisfied with the amount of work required of them.</font></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">79%
are satisfied with the amount of vacation time they have.</font></li>
<li class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">64%
said they are �completely or somewhat satisfied with the level of stress
in their job. </font></li>
</ul>

May Eliminate Income Tax For young Workers.</font></span></b></h3>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Many
countries today, including the United States as a whole, are no longer
able to maintain their population. The birth rate among the industrialized,
wealthy nations is continuing to decline to the level where their birth
rate is no longer sufficient to replace the number of people who leave
or die.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Some
individual American states find that they can�t find sufficient number
of workers to fill their job vacancies as younger workers leave for the
big cities and foreign countries. The state of Iowa loses more of
its young workers and graduates than all other states except North Dakota.
</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">The
Iowa senate has a bill proposal that would wave the state income tax for
all people under the age of 30. This will cost the state approximately
$200 million annually.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">They
feel if it persuades a few thousand young workers to stay, they consider
it money well spent. </font></p>

�We�re looking for a few good men�. Only the challenge here is
