Those of us who have faced long distance recruiting have found that salary expectations

that successful Operations Manager from San Francisco expect more money than
the equally qualified candidate from Birmingham? Is that because she�s
worth more? Or is it just because she expects more? That job that
pays $27,210 in Birmingham can pay as much as $37,050 in San Francisco even
though the national average for that same job is $30,000.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"> Also,
if your company�s growth requires you to relocate an employee into another state,
should you be paying her the same salary?</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Mercer
HR Consulting, a world leader in compensation studies, recently issued a study
showing the differences in pay across the country. What is so interesting
about their study is that instead of using the old standard of comparing the
cost of living between cities, they studied the actual salaries paid for jobs.
This is a new concept and Mercer feels that this is the more realistic method
to determine proper pay levels. In other words, if your company were located
in that city and you were hiring in that area, what would you have to pay for
that job? </font></p>

study was based on a job that has a national average pay of $30,000 per year.
