<font size="6" face="Verdana">Can You Spot Your Next Leader?</font></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana">Picking leaders is a tough job and we
dont always get it right. We tend to pick good workers to become managers and
we tend to pick good managers to become leaders. But again, we dont always get
it right. We already know that managers and leaders are not the same, that they
have different skills, talents, motives and methods. We dont really want a
manager in a leaders job and we dont want a leader in a managers job. Its
often been said, Managers get things done. Leaders decide what gets done. So
can we improve our leader selection and if so, how? </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana">Actually, people who become good
leaders often send pretty clear signals that theyre ready to take over. We can
pick up on those signals if we know what to watch for. Here are some of those
signals:</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana"><b>Theyre not perfectionists.</b>
They expect good performance, but they recognize that people will make
mistakes. Whats important to leaders is that people gave their best and know
how to improve, not that they were perfect. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana">Perfectionists, on the other hand,
cant tolerate others mistakes. The result is that the perfectionists
department tends to be a turnover machine. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana"><b>The seek feedback</b>. People who
are becoming good leaders are always giving and seeking feedback. Most workers
are reluctant to give feedback because they fear they are opposing the boss. A
good leader needs to encourage and be well practiced in the art of soliciting
feedback.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana">Leaders who wrap themselves in
self-satisfied cocoons tend to be the first to fail as leaders. And when they
occasionally stumble on to some feedback, they tend to be defensive about it and
discourage any more feedback. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana"><b>Theyre positive.</b> Your next
great leader should be a person who sees the good in every situation. That
doesnt mean youre looking for a Pollyanna who doesnt recognize problems, but
you dont want someone who <i>only </i>recognizes problems. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana">The Pessimist who feels that a
grumbling army is an effective army soon discovers that this is one army from
which the troops can resign.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana"><b>Theyre rarely misunderstood.</b>
Communicating involves a lot of factors, tone, attitude, choice of words, body
language and the right message that inspires others. They make their message
clear and they reaffirm that message in many ways. They make sure that no one
misses the meaning. You can easily spot them, they are the people who always
seem to get their message across.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana">Bad communicators feel that only one
method of communication is necessary, My way or the highway. They feel that
misunderstanding is always the fault of the listener, never the speaker. </font>
</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana"><b>Theyre good listeners</b>. Have
you ever heard anyone say My boss listens to me too much? Neither have I.
People want to be heard. Leaders want to listen. One mouth and two ears is the
guideline that tells them which is more important. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana">Non listeners cant hide the fact that
when they pretend to be listening, theyre only impatiently waiting for you to
stop talking so they can talk again. Someone who tends to interrupt others or
who just cant wait to tells others about the next great idea will have problems
as a leader.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana"><b>Theyre flexible.</b> Leaders have
to deal with a lot of people and lots of situations. Being able to change gears
and approaches, to fit the people and the situation is a sign of leadership. If
Joan is a good leader, it may well be because shes able to adjust to people and
situations as they change. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana">If Joe is a bad leader it may well be
because he expects people and situations to adjust to him.</font></p>

Government employment is the fastest growing job market in the
country today! In that government employees are mostly union, labor
unions would almost be out of business except for government
employment. As the number of employees who belong to a union
continues to shrink in the private sector, the only growth in union
membership today is due to the growth of government. Heres how the

them with government employees</font></p>

<font size="5" face="Verdana">The Price of Pokers Going Up</font></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="left"><font face="Verdana">There are
many new employee entitlement and protection laws being created and
almost every one will cost employers more to play in the American
business market. For example; California workers compensation rate
will see a staggering 24.4% increase in employers premiums on July
I of this year, and New Jersey just passed a <b><i>paid</i></b>
Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) law allowing employees up to 2/3
of their weekly pay (capped currently at $524) for six weeks.
</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="left"><font face="Verdana">Heres a look
at some of the federal laws being prepared for vote or being set up
for round two later:</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="left"><font face="Verdana"><b>The
Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA):</b> This is the bigee! If passed,
EFCA will allow unions to do away with the secret ballot when
conducting unionizing campaign elections. The union organizers will
be allowed to see how each worker voted. In addition it would
eliminate the right of the company to speak on their own behalf or
to counter statements by the union. The fight over this may go to
the Supreme Court. However the vote comes out, some form of this
bill will likely become law.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="left"><font face="Verdana"><b>The
Healthy Families Act (HFA):</b> If passed, HFA would require
companies with 15 or more employees to provide workers up to 56
hours of paid sick leave each year. Employees would accrue paid
leave at the rate of one hour for every 30 hours worked. And the
unused leave can be rolled over into the next calendar year. </font>
</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="left"><font face="Verdana"><b>Family and
Medical Leave Act (FMLA) expansion:</b> If passed the expanded FMLA
would change the 12 weeks of unpaid leave <b><i>to paid leave</i></b>
at the rate of 40% to 100% of weekly pay. Lower paid workers (under
$30,000 annually) would receive 100% of their wages, middle income
workers ($30,000 to $60,000) would receive 55% of their wages and
income workers (over $60,000) would receive 40% to 45% of their
wages with the benefit capped at $800 per week. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="left"><font face="Verdana"><b>National
Disability Benefit (as yet unnamed):</b> Proposed by Senator Ted
Kennedy. This bill would establish a $50.00 per day disability
benefit to any employee who can establish that he/she is unable to
perform at least two activities of daily living. The employee would
receive the money <b><i>even if he/she is working</i></b>! A
government managed fund would be established, similar to Social
Security or Unemployment Compensation and would be paid into by the
employee. The company would be required to collect and process the
payments.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="left"><font face="Verdana"><b>The
Employee Misclassification Protection Act (EMPA):</b> EMPA would set
substantial fines, tax penalties and adjusted wage costs against a
company that incorrectly classified a worker as exempt (salaried)
instead of non-exempt (hourly paid). The bill, likely to pass,
would require companies to:</font></p>
