<font size="5" face="Verdana">YOU on the Job</font></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="center" style="text-align: center"> </p>
<p><font face="Verdana">Known more as the YOU doctors than by their real
names, Michael Roizen, MD and Mehmet Oz, MD, these two doctors/celebrities have
authored the immensely popular books You: The Owners Manual, You On A Diet,
You: The Smart Patient and the more recent You: Staying Young. Although not
career coaches, the You doctors have reviewed several studies focused on
evaluating personal health as it relates to your job. The result is this six
item list of recommendations for making your day at work more productive and in
tune with your health. </font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana"><b><font size="4">1. Refocus your to-do list</font></b>
 Whether you use post-it notes, a notebook, a white board or scraps of tissue,
keep your to-do list but also keep an I-hate-to-do-list. When something
bothers you at work, write it down. Come back to revisit that list next week.
If youre still bothered by it, then its time to pro-actively pursue a
solution. Most of the time youll find that those annoyances are only fleeting
items and that should help you realize that its the big picture and not the
little things that count. React to annoyances by remembering Richard Carlson
Ph.Ds also famous book, Dont sweat the Small Stuffand its all small stuff.
</font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana"><b><font size="4">2. Optimize your work environment</font></b>
- Making a few changes of the type below to your work space can it make more
productive, and stress relieving:</font></p>
<ul>
<li><font face="Verdana"><b>Add Color</b> - A two year Public Health Service
study of public buildings found a 5.5 percent production improvement in
rooms that had additional color. A combination of green and red seems to be
the most productive. So-called ugly colors-white, black and brown actually
caused a drop by as much as 12 percent in performance, even on IQ tests.</font></li>
<li><font face="Verdana"><b>Add Light</b> - Green light and blue light
increase activity slightly, but yellow light improves activity by about 30
percent. </font></li>
<li><font face="Verdana"><b>Add Artwork and Greenery</b> - Keeping plants in
the office gives us the feeling of things that are living and growing.
Theyre even healing, comforting and empowering. For artwork choose natural
and calming pieces.</font></li>
</ul>
<p><font face="Verdana"><b><font size="4">3. Shift to energy management</font></b>
 Weve all been heard to say I have no time on one day or another. No time
to think, no time to work, no time to tell people that you just have no time!
Youre overburdened and undermanned. But the You doctors think its more of
an energy-management problem. Think back, when you were exited, jazzed-up and
ready to rock at work, then time management was no longer an issue and you may
have got to a somewhat in-the-groove state (like the zone for athletes) where
youre managing time efficiently and smartly. Also check the energy basics such
as:</font></p>
<ul>
<li><font face="Verdana"><b>Getting enough sleep?</b> Whatever you think,
six to eight hours is what you need to be energized.</font></li>
<li><font face="Verdana"><b>Nutritional deficiencies?</b> Sausage and egg
biscuits do not make good, nutritional breakfasts. Multi-vitamin or vitamin
B supplements can help.</font></li>
<li><font face="Verdana"><b>Fluids.</b> You can be dehydrated every day and
not know it or the drain it can be on your energy. Water and green tea fill
this gap, not sodas or energy drinks. </font></li>
<li><font face="Verdana"><b>Its mental.</b> If you tell your body that you
want to watch Scrubs reruns all night, it will respond by slowing down
energy production. But tell your body that you need to walk around the
neighborhood or swim a few laps or do an early morning stretch to the
ceiling routine and it will respond by giving you the energy you need to do
that. </font></li>
</ul>
<p><font face="Verdana"><b><font size="4">4. Find a buddy</font></b>  Whats
one of the best ways to enjoy your job more? Have a buddy or close friend at
work. Rather than an excuse to gossip, its really a key to being more
productive. And being more productive also reduces stress. A Gallup poll
showed that we get more done and dont miss as much time off the job when we
have friends at work. Why is that? Because we feel that obligation to that
friend and we enjoy the work more.</font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana"><b><font size="4">5. Dont be a victim</font></b>  Too
often we feel that everything just keeps coming downhill at us and we have to
catch all the balls. Try this; you can never have a bad discussion with your
boss if you start with the exact premise and goal that you both have to solve
the same problem or help the client. To help the boss is to help the company.
With some dialogue that evens the playing field (We both want whats best for
the customer, so lets figure out the best path ), theres less backstabbing
and more back patting.</font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana"><b><font size="4">6. Control your flow</font></b>
There are many traits that can make time and energy management a whole lot
easier. If you arent already using some of the following behaviors, integrate
them into your workday:</font></p>
<ul>
<li><font face="Verdana"><b>Map your day</b> You dont have to stick to an
exact schedule all day but you can get a lot of stress relief if you can
organize your tasks instead of leaving your whole day to random chance.
Dont work off your inbox! Work off your plan for the day. Focus on whats
important not urgent. Then manage your inbox. </font></li>
<li><font face="Verdana"><b>Take breaks</b>  Take a walk, have a bottle of
water, clear your head. The few minutes you spend away from your desk will
make you more efficient when you get back.</font></li>
<li><font face="Verdana"><b>Enlist the troops</b> We know that people can
be stubborn when it comes to accomplishing things on their own. They think
its a sign of incompetence or failure, or a sign of weakness or inability
to do the job. But youll save more time, get more done, reduce stress and
create a little team work by asking for help when you need it. </font></li>
</ul>
<p><font face="Verdana">Youre going to spend a lot of your life at work. Isnt
it smarter to make it a better experience for YOU? </font></p>
