can be few things more valuable in your life and your career than a guardian
angel that tells you when you�re on the right track and when you�re veering
off the road you�ve chosen. Even more so when that angel lets you know
what steps to take to keep you on that road. That guardian angel is giving
you what we call �Feedback�.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">But
there�s a problem with feedback - it�s not used nearly enough. Many supervisors
and managers are reluctant to give feedback and business owners want to know
two things; why don�t they and how should they? </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Most
observers think that the supervisor�s reluctance is due to a fear of confrontation
or of coming across as too superior or bossy. But I think it�s because
of two different things:</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>1
Most supervisors just don�t realize the significance of their words to their
employees</b>. They don�t realize what an important figure they are in
this person�s life. Long after they�ve left the world-of-work behind many
retirees can still remember that day, 30 years ago, when their supervisor told
them that they were the best at what they do. They still talk about that important
day and remember accurately the words that were said and the exact pitch of
the supervisor�s voice as well as the feeling they had when they went home to
tell their family. And they�re still telling them. As a supervisor,
you have the power to change this person�s life. Don�t be reluctant to use that
power. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>2
They don�t know how.</b></font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">So
let�s take a look at the basics of giving feedback to employees, both negative
and positive.</font></p>
<h4 class="MsoNormal"><b><u><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Giving
Negative Feedback</font></u></b></h4>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Get
your emotions under control</font></b><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">.
If you let your fear, anger or impatience get in the way, you�re going to screw
this up. Imagine that this person is your best friend. Stay calm.
If you yell and scream the other person will become agitated and defensive and
won�t even hear what you�re saying.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>Find
a private place.</b> Criticize in private, praise in public. Sometimes
it�s unavoidable but you pay a price when you break this rule.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>Focus
on the actions not the person</b>. This is not a bad person. This
is a good person who did bad things. Focus on those things, focus on what
you want to change. Focus on the performance.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>Be
specific.</b> It does no good to tell someone �you have a bad attitude�.
You need to identify specific actions or specific things you want them to understand.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>Be
timely.</b> Feedback should be given as soon as possible after the event.
If you see someone being rude to a customer, don�t wait until the annual review
to tell them. How many other customers will they have angered in the meantime?
</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>Reaffirm
your faith in this person.</b> Tell them that you still have faith in
them and their abilities. It�s just their performance you want to change.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>Stop
talking</b>. After you told this person what specific actions were inappropriate
and what you would like to see changed then stop talking. Give the other
person a chance to respond or to even refute what you�re saying. And <i>listen
</i>to what they have to say. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>Define
positive steps to take</b>. Agree on what the future performance should
be and the steps to take to accomplish that. Be sure they are clearly
defined and specific. If additional training or instructions are needed
understand what your role is in that process and carry it out. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>Get
over it.</b> After you�ve given the negative feedback and agreed upon
a solution, move on. Don�t harbor ill will because this employee made
a mistake. Don�t hover over them �hawking� their every move. Monitor
their performance but don�t obsess. It�s been said; �Those who never made
a mistake, never made a discovery.�</font></p>
<h4 class="MsoNormal"><b><u><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Giving
Positive Feedback</font></u></b></h4>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Do
it now.</font></b><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">
When you see, it say it! Praise in public, criticize in private. The larger
the crowd the better.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>Be
specific.</b> Don�t just say. �Good job Sally�. Say �Sally that
new procedure for routing service calls has really improved our customer satisfaction.
Thanks for coming up with that.�</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>Make
a big deal out of it.</b> You don�t want to assemble the whole company
for every positive comment, but make as much ceremony as you can.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>Do
it often.</b> Don�t wait for the big successes, celebrate the smaller
ones too.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>Do
it evenly</b>. Big successes need big recognition. Small successes
need smaller recognition. If you throw a party for every small success,
you�ll diminish the effect on the big ones.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>Be
sincere.</b> Don�t praise someone for coming in on time. Don�t congratulate
someone just for doing their job. People will see right through you.
Really mean it when you give positive feedback.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">As
a business owner, your secret weapon may be a supervisor who acts like a guardian
angel.</font></p>

a Job Market time period there are more workers than there are jobs,
in a Worker�s Market time period there are more jobs than there are
workers. The current Worker�s Market is expected to continue
for many years as the American birth rate remains low while the number
of retirees continues to grow and the number of job openings continues
to increase. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="left"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Most
of the developed countries are facing this same phenomenon for the
same reasons. Those countries across the globe are filling those
jobs primarily from two sources, immigrant workers and outsourcing.

this American Worker�s Market job the requirements for those jobs
remain high but there are still many jobs that do not require advanced
education. The highest paying job in America that requires no
degree or associates degree and can be obtained through on-the-job
training (OJT) is Air Traffic Controller. With a median wage
of $117,000 annually ($56.37 hourly), this high-stress job with a
shortage of applicants is another example of the growing Worker�s
Market. Ten of the highest paid jobs on the list are managerial
or supervisory and require only previous experience or OJT. </font></p>

are many reasons for the differences between women�s earning and men�s.
Some say its male discrimination, some say women don�t negotiate hard
enough, some say women are more focused on time for family matters

their male counterparts according to a New York Times report.

Full time women workers between the ages of 21 and 30 in Dallas had
earnings that were more than 20% higher than the men according to
a study at Queen�s College. In New York, the women earn 17%

The differences are not due to discrimination, said the report, but
because more women are graduating from college than men. </font></p>

state of Texas recently voted to drop the current math textbooks that
are mandated in most states. The textbooks are the product of
the University of Chicago whose �Everyday Math� curriculum is laid
out in those school books. </font></p>

parents with math degrees, medical degrees and Ph.D.s in econometric
analysis began to tell their children�s teachers that they couldn�t
understand the �Everyday Math� in the books, some state officials

found school teachers telling them that their third graders can�t
do simple multiplication yet, second graders coming home with kindergarten
work for the second year in a row. A fourth grade teacher proclaimed
�The curriculum failure was undeniable. <i>Not one</i> of my
students knew his or her multiplication tables, and few had mastered
the most basic knowledge of multiplication and their division was
abysmal. What would you do if you discovered that<i> none</i>
of your fourth grade students could correctly tell you the answer
to four times eight?� </font></p>

to by critics as �Fuzzy Math�, the math concept has been used in schools
for decades and was originally called �New Math�. In Puget Sound,

problem solving ability of the individual to arrive at the correct
