<h2 class="MsoNormal" align="center" style="text-align:center"><b> <span style="font-size:22.0pt"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Management
Is Not For Everyone</font></span></b></h2>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">We
tend to assume that everyone wants to be a manager. Being the boss is
the American workers dream isnt it? Certainly if we select our best
worker, offer him/her that promotion, teach them some management skills well
all be happier wont we? Well we used to think so but we now know thats
not completely true. For starters we know that not everyone is cut out
for management. But beyond that observation we are finding more of todays
workers saying that they dont want to be managers. They find that the
responsibility; the demands to produce end results, the unpopularity of authority
figures today and even the loneliness are all factors that make the job a lot
less desirable than we used to believe. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">But
cant we show them the advantages, the money, better benefits and the opportunity
that being on the management team offers? Its in our interest to do so.
Good people managers are necessary for productivity, profit, success and even
survival. Beyond all that, managers become the beacon, the standard for
staff and crew members to aspire to. We want workers at all levels to
see the advantages of improving their skills, their productivity and increased
value to the company. What you reward you get more of. Developing
themselves to these standards can be rewarded. You too could reach these
lofty goals.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Its
obvious that there are misconceptions on all sides of this issue. Potential
managers should be armed with realistic expectations about what being a manager
really means before they accept or reject the position. John Reh, HR executive,
executive coach and nationally known author has published some research on this
issue. The following list is partly based on his observations on the upside
and the downside of being a manager. </font></p>
<h3 class="MsoNormal"><b><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Downside</font></b></h3>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Its
lonely at the top </font></b><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"> You
are not as close to the employees as you once were. You cant be.
A manager needs to be a step removed from the employees in order to objectively
make decisions. Many first time supervisors, promoted from within the
group are amazed at how quickly former friends become cold and distant.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>No
Immediate Reinforcement</b> A carpenter, painter or even a salesperson
gets almost immediate feedback on whether their doing a good job or not.
They get the satisfaction of seeing results pretty quick. But management
just isnt that way. Goals are longer term, monthly, quarterly and even
annually. The real measure of a managers success is in the improvement
and development of their people and that can be very long term. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>The
Buck Really Does Stop Here</b> You may, and in most cases should, have
your employees make many of their own day-to-day decisions. However, ultimately,
the responsibility for the final results will rest with you. You are accountable
for the end result.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>Somebody
Always Wants your Job</b> Even though many workers today shun management
responsibility, there is always someone who wants your job, who thinks they
can do it better than you and is working to bring that about. As a CEO
there may be people in your organization who want your job and even more on
the outside who are also after it. They may not only disagree with decisions
you have made, but you may have actually made a wrong decision that is being
used to discredit you. The higher you go in an organization, the fewer
positions there are at that level and that much more competition for them.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>Legal
Liabilities</b> Managers face legal liabilities that most workers
dont. You may have to sign documents, ensure that the workplace is safe,
free from harassment and is being managed with no illegal discrimination. In
todays environment managers can be held liable, fined and even imprisoned for
workplace legal violations.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>Limited
Free Time</b> Managers take problems home. They work on weekends
more than non-mangers. They skip more vacations, take off less time and
can seldom shut off the job when the end of the day comes for everyone else.
</font></p>
<h3 class="MsoNormal"><b><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Upside</font></b></h3>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Pay.</font></b><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">
From the supervisor up to the CEO, each level of management is paid progressively
more. More pay and better benefits are rewards of managers who can get
things done. Often bonuses are included or improved. Starting on
the road to income expansion can be rewarding in very many ways for you and
your family.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>Authority</b>
The authority to assign work, adjust schedules and reward employees is a powerful
tool. But successful managers gain real authority by leading successful
teams. That kind of authority or power doesnt come from above. it comes
from the people you manage. You have only as much authority as your group
gets you by being a successful group. Your authority comes from the willingness
of the people in your group to grant it to you. There may be no better
authority to have than that. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>Status
and Prestige</b> In our society, people value accomplishment and titles.
Crew Leader, supervisor, foreman, manager, superintendent, general manager,
district manager, vice president, chief financial officer, chief operating officer,
chief executive officer, board member, chairman of the board are each steps
up and badges of honor and achievement that attracts respect and prestige.
All societies generally recognize titles as indicators of advancement and achievement.
</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>Freedom
to Act </b>As individuals gain more authority, they also gain one of the
greatest motivators for most workers, the freedom to make decisions, the freedom
to act without asking permission or feeling restricted by micro-management.
This is the freedom to feel less like workers and more like intelligent and
mature human beings entrusted by others. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>Sense
Of Personal Accomplishment</b> If your long range goal is to run your
own or anyone elses business, you should be starting now on a management career.
Most big dreams in life can only be realized by your learning to manage something.
Separate from the respect you may be granted by others, the respect you have
within you for being active and purposeful in the improvement of your
abilities and your life certainly belongs to you whose efforts are being recognized
by others as well. </font></p>

law making it a little more difficult and a little more expensive
to operate. As of October 16, 2007, all employers in New York
State who have commissioned salespeople on their staff must enter
into a written employment contract with those sales employees.
All the terms of employment including pay, benefits and any other
policies required by the company must be detailed in a written document
signed by both parties. </font></p>

may well negate the employee handbook polices for those employees.

will prevail over the employers rights under the EAW and the terms
of the employee handbook as well. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="left"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">In
the event that the company does not create the written contract and

<p class="MsoNormal" align="left"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Weve
been talking about it for almost 50 years and in October it actually
happened. The first Baby Boomer (the population explosion of
1946 to 1964) officially retired on October 15th 2007.
Although only 61 years old, Kathleen Casey-Kirschling, a former school
teacher born on January 1, 1946 started what is expected to be an
avalanche of early retirees drawing from that big cornucopia in the
sky called Social Security (SS). Although many politicians are
still saying that the SS system will be just fine going into the 2040s
and are still promising even more entitlement benefits, realists know
that by 2017 there wont be enough SS taxes being paid into the system
to pay the benefits that are being paid out of the system. Thats
because that big population boom didnt have as many kids as their
parents had. The average family size has been reduced from approximately
three children per family to approximately one child per family.
The result is that there arent enough workers out their paying into
the system to support those big retirement numbers. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="left"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Uncle
Sam wont be able to borrow any more money from the SS fund as hes
been doing since the mid 1950s. Now hell be borrowing money
from the private market at high interest rates to pay those retirees
pensions. Do you care? Well you might when you have to
compete with Uncle Sam for the available credit, which will carry
interest rates much higher than youve ever paid before. </font></p>
