ATTITUDES ON THE JOB </font></b></h2>
<p class="MsoNormal"> </p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">100
years ago philosopher Kahlil Gibran wrote about his belief that the ability
to achieve positive results in your life was directly linked to your ability
to think and focus on positive things. Many of the great industrial leaders
of the early 20th century credited his message for their accomplishments.
Over 50 years ago Dr. Norman Vincent Peale wrote that The Power of Positive
Thinking can make you a success. Millions of people worldwide still use
that philosophy to build their careers and businesses. Today in Bob Proctors
best-selling book The Laws of Attraction and in Rhonda Byrness The Secret
they reiterate this long held philosophy that what you think affects what your
life will be about. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">3M
Corporation may not be studying these leaders but they do attribute poor work
performance to bad attitudes. They believed that those people with negative
attitudes about their work were the worst performers. When they laid off
the bottom 10 percent of their poor performers, their productivity shot up 18
percent. When they laid off the next 10 percent productivity went up another
4 percent. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Negative
employees destroy morale and turn off customers. Negative attitudes are
contagious and can bring a team down. Negative employees tend to do just
enough to get by. Theyre not too happy about even being there.
Work takes drive and intention. You have to <i>want</i> to do something
in order to do it best. So how does an employee with a good positive attitude
behave? What do we look for in ourselves, our employees and our teams?
Author and trainer Dr Allen Zimmerman suggests these four characteristics.</font></p>

<h3 class="MsoNormal"><b><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">4

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left:.25in"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">A
day at work with nothing to do is a very long and boring day indeed. A
day that is productive and busy goes by in a flash and creates an atmosphere
of confidence and success. Most people know hard work is good for the
company. They know its good for the customer. They may even know
how good it is for the country. But winners know its good for the soul. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left:.25in"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Best-
selling author Rabbi Harold Kushner puts it this way; Work hard, not solely
because it will bring you rewards and promotions, but because it will give you
a sense of being a competent person. Something corrosive happens to the
souls of people who stop caring about the quality of their work and begin to
just go through the <span style="font-size:14.0pt">motions</span></font></p>

job is perfect and theres always room for improvement. And yes, theres
always something to complain about. In spite of that, winners decide that
theyre going to like their work. Its a decision they make, not a feeling
they have, if everything is going well. On a day-to-day basis, youre
the one who decides t</font>o feel bad or feel good. </p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left:.25in"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Like
everyone else, positive employees can see whats wrong with a situation.
But positive employees dont get stuck on that point. Winners keep motivating
themselves by looking for and finding the good in any situation and focus on
how they can make it better. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left:.25in"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">By
contrast, negative employees focus on a minor annoyance and let it dominate
everything. Negative people attending a conference find that the seats
are uncomfortable. Even though the trip was great, the hotel wonderful,
the food and company are enjoyable and the conference is doing what it should,
the negative person is forever focused on that bad seat. They gain very little
from the overall experience.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left:.25in"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Of
course, positive employees, who see the good in every situation, often annoy
the negative folks who see positive people as Pollyannaish, silly or blind.
They are more comfortable having you join them in all that negativity.
Let it be.</font></p>

business manager knows the cardinal rule Under-promise and Over-deliver!
Positive employees are seldom satisfied with just getting the job done or doing
the bare minimum. Doing better and doing more is how development works.
Development is how success works.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left:.25in"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Positive
employees find out whats expected and do their best to exceed those expectations.
Whether its dazzling a customer with better service than they have ever experienced
before, or surprising a coworker by offering extra help, positive employees
focus on how they can do more, not less.</font></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">If
youre trying to assemble a top-notch team, you might want to look for these
characteristics in the people you bring together. If you want to move
ahead in your career, focus on the positives you are seeking and display these
positive behaviors. If youre choosing whether to be positive or negative,
think about which attitude you appreciate more from your fellow workers.
