I advise it and wish it for all my competitors.

In
training managers to do performance evaluations, its the number one problem
we hear. It isnt always called procrastination but when the performance
problems are described as Work is not completed on time, Reports and paperwork
are turned in late or not at all, Never initiated his performance goals,
Doesnt returns tools to their proper place: or even Doesnt follow procedures,
I think it can usually be traced back to that ole devil procrastination.
Things are being put off so long that they just dont get done at all.
Its a great labor saving device.

Often
the problem can be traced to an individuals personality type or management
style. (For root causes and solutions see the Personnel Notebooks
Procrastination and People Dynamics on Your associations web site)
But lets get right to the bottom line of this issue and address specific steps
you can take now to reduce this career and success killer called Procrastination.

10 Tips To Reduce Procrastination
Now

1
Start each week off with a planning session and use a weekly/daily planner.
Write down all the important deadlines or appointments that may be coming up
as well as reminders to yourself on the day before. Use a highlighter
to emphasize something exceptionally important.

2
Plan your days according to your most productive times of the day.
You may be a morning person or maybe youre best after lunch. Plan most
of your activities during that period of time when you are least likely to procrastinate.

3
Give yourself a time limit on those things youre not looking forward to doing.
Most people can do anything they want if they know there is an end in
sight. Set a time limit of one hour for an unpleasant task. It may
become more bearable knowing it will be done within a short time.

4
Decide whether you will toss or keep something right away. Too many
of us keep papers and mail to look at later. Decide immediately if it
is worth keeping or not. If it is, act on it now, if it isnt throw it
away. Get rid of the maybe later: pile.

5
Do at least one undesired task in the morning and just get it over with
so that the rest of the day you can at least feel that youve accomplished something.

6
Balance your day. Fill in some enjoyable tasks between those you are
not so thrilled about doing.

7
Break large projects down into smaller chunks. How do you eat an elephant?
One bite at a time. Try to keep your things to do list down to items
you will do in 30 minutes or less. If some items are longer, do them in
30-minute bites.

8
Try to prevent interruptions before they occur. Turn off the phone,
dont answer the door, dont allow yourself to be distracted. You may
think people will get angry if they cant get to you when they want. But
you will find a greater respect if you set your own schedule, stick to it and
get things accomplished.

9
Avoid over-planning. Once you have a plan in place, dont consider
that the completed job. Its the things in that plan that that must be
accomplished. When you have a plan, act on it. Dont be continuously
fine-tuning it trying for perfection. Perfection is the enemy of good.

10

after accomplishing tasks really helps when youre starting the next list.

we seem to be bashing the media this month, lets finish up here by
putting in one more jab. The media in print and TV reported
excitedly in January that women no longer seemed to want to be married
due to the confined restriction of marriage and the lack of any need
for men in their lives. The announcements were from a study
conducted by The New York Times wherein they reported that 51 percent
of women, as of 2005, have no spouse. They announced that married
couples in the U.S. are now in a minority. They observed that
women are delighting in their newfound freedom.

The
lengthy article quoted several women who felt that the restrictions
and burdens of family life make it a very undesirable choice for women
today. The report suggested that government laws, public policy
and the American workplace should no longer be designed around the
concept of marriage. Reading the headlines and watching the TV sound
bites seemed to announce a revolution against marriage and family.

However,
Thomas Sowell, an economist, a senior fellow at the Hoover Institute
and the author of several books on economics and social issues decided
to read the fine print in the study and discovered something that
was not in the sound bites or had been buried in that fine print.

Sowell,
reports that the study included girls from age 16 and up. It
also included women who were widowed and divorced and women whose
husbands were in the military or in prison. At age 16
few girls are married yet. Widowed and divorced women had been
married and many had been so many times. Wives with husbands
in the military and in prison were in fact married. But the
headline 51% of Women Live Without A Spouse and the first
few quotes from the doomsayers presented a different story.
In reality, Sowell stated, only one fourth of women, including the
16 year olds, have never been married.

Sowell
also pointed out the fallacy of another widely accepted media myth,
that more than half of all marriages end in divorce. Those figures,
he reported are based on the comparison between the number of marriages
and the number of divorces in one specific year. In that year,
there were half as many people who filed for divorced as there were
people who married. That, he stated, has no bearing on the vast
numbers of people who are married and who are divorced. In the
following year, there may well be more people who marry than who file
for divorce. The reality, says Sowell, is that far more marriages
last than end in divorce.
