and engrossing problems employees have are based on money and credit
problems. Those problems will affect their employers as well.
</FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><FONT face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"
size=-1>Debt problems cause stress, create anxiety, sap workers productivity,
cause health problems and can distract people from almost everything else in
their lives. Collection agencies calling, paying exorbitant fees for
violating bank and credit card rules, family arguments and even depression are
often the results of personal money management and credit problems.
Professor emeritus E. Thomas Garner of Virginia Tech and the former Director of
the �National Institute of Personal Finance Employee Education� reports the
results of his studies regarding employees with debt and credit problems.
�They are absent more frequently and waste time at work dealing with financial
matters (they�re) on the telephone with creditors, (and) trying to get a loan
from their 401(k)�. Many Psychologists state that money and credit
difficulties cause damaging self-image problems and can potentially ruin ones
entire life. </FONT></P>
<H3><FONT face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">How We Got
Here</FONT></H3>
<P class=MsoNormal><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 14pt"><FONT
face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size=-1>America�s attitude toward
debt has dramatically changed in the last 20 years. Buying a home was once
the only justifiable cause for heavy debt. A two to three year loan for a
car was acceptable. Almost everything else was considered excessive
debt. Where excessive debt was formerly considered an embarrassment, it is
now generally accepted as the norm. </FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><FONT face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"
size=-1>Personal saving has continued to decrease for those 20 years, down to a
point where America is now the lowest ranked of all the developed nations in the
amount of money its citizens save. In January 2005, American savings rate
actually dropped to <I>minus</I> 0.7 percent. More than half of workers
surveyed by the Employment Benefit Research Institute say they carry credit card
debt over from month-to-month. Twenty-eight percent said that due to debt,
they were not only worse off than last year, but are also just one major setback
away from financial disaster.</FONT></P>
<H3><FONT face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Educating Your
Employees</FONT></H3>
<P class=MsoNormal><SPAN style="FONT-SIZE: 14pt"><FONT
face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size=-1>Although a personal
problem, many employers are now recognizing this issue. What possibilities
arise when companies consider a workforce that could be relieved of one of the
most oppressive forces in their lives? What effect could that have in the
workplace? </FONT></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><FONT face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"
size=-1>Kathy Stoughton, a financial specialist with ComPsych, reports that her
company has seen a dramatic rise in demand from clients for basic money
management, budget strategizing and debt management courses. It�s most
requested workshop is �How To Get Beyond Living Paycheck To Paycheck.�
Financial Finesse, a financial education provider in Manhattan Beach, California
reports a continuing yearly increase in people calling about debt. The two
most common questions asked are �How do I put together a budget?� and �How do I
deal with creditors?� </FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><FONT face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"
size=-1>AFLAC, an insurance company in Columbus, Georgia began offering
financial lunch-and-learn sessions for employees seven years ago. For most
of that time the subject matter was focused on retirement planning, college
savings plans, investment plans and buying a home. But in the last two
years the primary subjects were on basic money management, creating and managing
budgets and spending less than what is coming in. </FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><FONT face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"
size=-1>Providing those classes is a low cost benefit with great potential for
improving employee�s lives. But when you consider how many financial
companies out there are willing to provide these classes for free, the cost is
no longer a major factor. Companies like Merrill Lynch and Wachovia even
pay for the lunch. </FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><FONT face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"
size=-1>The reports show a jump in moral and improvement in retention.
Another plus being reported is greater participation in 401(k) savings plans and
fewer </FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><FONT face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"
size=-1>401(k) loans. A study reported in the Journal of Compensation and
Benefits showed that 80 percent of those respondents who received financial
education counseling felt they now had a working knowledge of how to handle
personal finances. Additionally, 44 percent said they had developed a plan
for their financial future and 37 percent had significantly reduced their
personal debt load. </FONT></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><FONT face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif"
size=-1>Says Kathy Staughton, �If an employee learns how to make good decisions,
financial and otherwise, chances are they will make good decisions on behalf of
the company.� Employers are beginning to see that financial education
changes workers attitudes and behaviors. Can you think of any greater
benefit that you could offer to your employees than a chance to turn financial
problems around or even to prevent them before they start? </FONT></P>
