<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14.0pt"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">You�re
not alone! Everyone gets stuck in a rut. When it happens it seems
to evolve into a permanent condition and every move seems to get you in deeper.
Am I really this lazy? Is my head dead? Am I finally coming to the
realization that I�m a fraud and everyone now sees it? Will I never get
out of this rut and back into the groove?</font></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Have
you been here? If not at some time you probably will be. Life is
not an express train streamlining down the track. It�s a journey, on foot,
down a road with lots of ruts along with the grooves. When your stuck in one,
your first step should be to stop the downward process. Stop making it
worse by continuing the festering, languorous, self-loathing and self-pity.
It�s time to reverse the process.</font></p>
<p class="MsoBodyText3"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Susan
Ward, a well-known Canadian consultant, business trainer, college professor
and author, sees the problem as one of the worst de-motivators in businesses.
She recommends the following 7 steps:</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>1.Walk
Away</b>. When bogged down in a problem that is going nowhere, walk away
and do something else. If you�re mired in a creative task, do something
mindless such as exercising or cleaning up your work area. If it�s a problem
requiring �out-of-the-box� thinking, do something that requires concentration
such as a crossword puzzle. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>2.
Break It Into Smaller, Bite Size Pieces</b>. Your project may be so overwhelming
that it begins to look an unyielding mountain. This is where most ruts
begin. Break that mountain down into individual steps to take one-at-a-time.
If your mountain is to create a marketing plan, break it into steps such as:</font></p>

ideal customer. </font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">2-Decide on
your pricing policy. </font></p>
<p><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">3-Decide how
to advertise your services or products etc. </font></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Then
start doing step 1 and experience the satisfaction of completing each step.
</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>3.
Flip Your Schedule.</b> You�ve changed your environment and you�ve redefined
your goal. Now change your timing. If you normally get around to
your project after lunch, reschedule it for the first thing in the morning.
You might even start it on your day off. Changing your schedule, even
temporarily, can change your outlook on the project. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>4.
Take A Nap.</b> Particularly if you�re getting by on 4 to 5 hours sleep
a night. Medical science tells us today that over 70 percent of us are
not getting enough sleep and that leads directly to rut digging. 6 to
8 hours sleep is almost essential to most of us. Taking a power nap of
15 to 20 minutes in the daytime may sound like �goldbricking� to some, but the
pay-off in resurgence and productivity is well established. Dr. Sandra
Mednick, a scientist at the Salk Institute, reported from her research that
power naps �can lift productivity and mood, lower stress, improve memory and
learning.�</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>5.
Take A Forced Break.</b> The world won�t stop if you�re not producing
anything for a day or two. You may not be producing anything anyway.
Leaving your work alone and really geting it out of your mind for a few days
could actually refresh and recharge you for months. Do something completely
different; explore some new place you�ve never been. Even a short-term
break can make long-term changes. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>6.
Keep Slogging.</b> Classical philosophers are often quoted on the advantages
of �slogging.� Only they called it �persistence.� Their sage advice
has recommended persistence as the primary cause of success even over brains,
strength and politics. Do you think that Michelangelo felt motivated every
day to work on that ceiling? He didn�t even want to take on that project.
But he �slogged� away for four years and created �Genesis� on the ceiling of
the Sistine Chapel. Sometimes putting a few demands on yourself or forcing
yourself to carry on is the answer. As you move ahead, past a stepping-stone
or two you can really become immersed in what you�re doing.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>7.
Bribe Yourself.</b> Sometimes what we need is just a little incentive
(or maybe a big one) to push us out of that rut. What�s your passion,
your weakness? Maybe it�s dinner and a movie or a weekend trip.
It could be as simple as a chocolate bar. Whatever it is that works for
you. If you�re the bribable type, you can be the briber as well.
And pay off that bribe when you�re done.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Falling
into a rut is another form of losing your motivation. But being down there
doesn�t mean you have to stay down there. Trying one or more of these
techniques may get you fired up again. Being successful at this can make
you successful at anything.</font></p>
