<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14.0pt"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">What
if you identified clearly what you wanted to achieve in your company and it
turned out to be just what your employees wanted as well? And if you then
found that it was exactly what your company needed to improve productivity,
efficiency, employee engagement, employee morale and profits? Sounds like
something unique that you would want to know about, right? </font></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">That
�unique� thing we seek is called �Expectations.� Having expectations,
knowing what they are, communicating them to employees and measuring the impact
on each job and the company is so essential to success that without it success
seems almost an accident.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Most
business owners, executives and managers have a general idea of what they want.
Too often it�s a vague wish for good results. But if you can identify
clearly what you want and truly expect to achieve it, those expectations can
be realized. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">At
a recent seminar on identifying �What is my greatest performance block?� Professor
Harold Stolovich, Ph.D. asked the question ��Is there anyone in this group who
absolutely cannot improve his or her work performance?� Every individual
in the group indicated that they had room for improvement. He then asked
�What�s holding you back?� The number one response was �I would perform
better if I knew what the exact expectations of my job were and had more specific
feedback on how I performed�.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Two
recent nationwide surveys on employee job satisfaction agreed with Professor
Stolovitch when employees said:</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: -.25in; margin-left: .5in"> <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">1.<span style="font:7.0pt "Times New Roman"">
</span>They don�t know what is expected of them but they wish they did.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: -.25in; margin-left: .5in"> <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">2.<span style="font:7.0pt "Times New Roman"">
</span>They would rather be somewhat over-worked than under-worked,</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">So,
to get what you want and to give employees what they want you want to produce
a clear communication of expectat</font><span style="font-size: 14.0pt">ions.</span></p>
<h3 class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-size: 16.0pt"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">Are
Expectations Important?</font></span></b></h3>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14.0pt"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Well,
if you were expecting a $100 per month increase and instead you received a $200
per month increase, you would be very happy. However, if you were expecting
a $300 increase and you got a $200 increase, you would be very disappointed.
Same money, but a different response. What�s the difference? Expectations!</font></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">If
you knew that your supervisor expected a project to be completed by Friday,
most of us would get it done just in time� by Friday. But if we knew he
or she expected it to be completed by Wednesday, we would target Wednesday and
also get it done just in time�by Wednesday. We tend to rise to the level
of expectations.</font></p>
<h3 class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-size: 16.0pt"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">How
do I set my expectations?</font></span></b></h3>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14.0pt"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">You
need to sit down, slow down and examine what your mission is. What are
your company�s or department�s goals?. What are your targets? What�s
wrong that needs to be made right? Then:</font></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: -.25in; margin-left: .3in"> <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><span style="font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Symbol">�<span style="font:7.0pt "Times New Roman"">
</span></span>Identify to yourself just what you want to accomplish. You don�t
have to shoot for the moon. Less can be more if less is more realistic.
Small chunks are easier to understand, to process and to achieve. Avoid
lengthy, ambiguous images. If you were guaranteed that expecting your
wants would make them happen, what would you expect?</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: -.25in; margin-left: .3in"> <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><span style="font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Symbol">�<span style="font:7.0pt "Times New Roman"">
</span></span>Convert your expectations into statements that are clear and easily
understood.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: -.25in; margin-left: .3in"> <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><span style="font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Symbol">�<span style="font:7.0pt "Times New Roman"">
</span></span>Be specific. Be precise. You don�t want to state �customer
approval�. You want to state what it takes to achieve customer approval.
Identify the things that this employee is in control of. Make the statements
easy to understand. The more clear the statements the higher probability
that they will be met.</font></p>
<h3 class="MsoNormal"><b><span style="font-size: 16.0pt"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">How
Do I Communicate My Expectations Effectively?</font></span></b></h3>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: -.25in; margin-left: .3in"> <span style="font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Symbol"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">�<span style="font:7.0pt "Times New Roman"">
</span></font></span><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">Select
the right person(s) to communicate the expectations. That might be you.
But it should be whoever who is close to the work and sees the performance.
This is usually the supervisor although a high performing employee might also
be the communicator. Be sure that this person understands the expectations,
believes in them and is capable of making themselves understood.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: -.25in; margin-left: .3in"> <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><span style="font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Symbol">�<span style="font:7.0pt "Times New Roman"">
</span></span>Provide examples, samples or models of the process or the actions.
Demonstrate them. Ask the employee(s) to repeat them. Do the same
showing them what you do not expect to see. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: -.25in; margin-left: .3in"> <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><span style="font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Symbol">�<span style="font:7.0pt "Times New Roman"">
</span></span>Verify the results regularly and let each person know how they
are doing and help them improve as needed.</font></p>

</span></span>Re-examine those expectations regularly to assure that they are
still relevant and adjust them when they need to be.</font></p>

survey, most employees assume that they are underpaid. 65% of
surveyed respondents said that they plan to leave their current job

The survey was conducted by a wage and salary consulting firm that
knows what those jobs should pay. The firm, SALARY.com, found
that only 19% of those workers were actually underpaid. But
they also found that 17% were overpaid. If that seems to reflect
a normal spread, why do so many workers think they�re underpaid?

Some say this is the generation of high expectations. SALARY
.com thinks it may be a hangover from the dot-com boom and bust.
During the over-heated boom of the hi-tech bubble in the 90s, employees
were getting pay raises of 20% along with better titles. After
the bust, many companies kept giving the big titles but there were
no more big raises. </font></p>
<p class="MsoBodyText2" align="left"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">SALARY.com
also stated that employees often see their performance level differently
than do their supervisors. So understanding where you stand
in the performance department may better indicate whether you are
under, over or paid just about right.</font></p>

worry about what that fired employee might do to your PC, your secured
data or your network on his/her way out? We�ve all had that

But you may have a new weapon in your arsenal to deal with such sabotage.</font></p>

recent court decision (Seventh U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals-March
8, 2006) has held that a company may pursue such an employee under
the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA). </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" align="left"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">A
company (International Airport Centers) employed a man to identify
and research real estate that the company may want to acquire.
They provided the employee with a laptop computer to record the data
he collected. In the course of doing so the employee was also
engaged in improper conduct, which was documented on the laptop.
The employee decided to quit the company and set up his own competing
business. So he deleted all the company�s data including the
incriminating documents, in a permanent non-recoverable way.
</font></p>
<p class="MsoBodyText2" align="left"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">The
CFAA was not originally intended to be used in employment situations,
but the company was allowed to use this law to sue this employee.
The decision now allows companies a strong weapon and a deterrent
to other potential saboteurs in such cases. The law allows the
company to collect compensatory damages as well as other relief.
That act also carries criminal judgments, penalties and prison sentences
of up to 10 years.</font></p>
