<h1 align="center"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="+3">Managing
People Is A Tough Job </font></h1>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size: 14.0pt"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">A
surprising trend has been developing for several years. More workers are
refusing to accept supervisory or managerial promotions. There is much
discussion about why this is so. </font></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">The
larger view is that younger people and students have come into the workforce
with distrust or dislike for the corporate structure authority, being part
of the system, being judgmental or being the responsible one in charge.
All of which is inherent in the job of managing people.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">But
in reality, that problem exists in only a small percentage of the workforce.
There are however real problems that make todays managerial job tougher.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">At
a recent meeting of the American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) Bruce Tolgan,
author of books on managing the differences in work force generations, said
that its getting harder to manage people. He identified the following
three reasons based on 12,000 interviews over 12 years.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>1.
Generations.</b> The workforce is both aging, as the Baby Boomers reach
their 60s, and is also seeing a surge of workers who are just completing college.
This means that the workforce is becoming more diverse and one management philosophy
may not fit all.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>2.
Work Systems.</b> The old idea of employees working in a pyramid structure
with one boss at the top overseeing multiple layers of management has changed.
Workers now work in a flexible, multi-responsibility work structure, where the
job and the work assignments are determined on an as-needed basis.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>3.
Loyalties.</b> Workers no longer stay with the same company for life.
Their loyalty is less to the company and more to their careers, the technology,
their personal life and their families. They will change entire
careers as often as their parents used to change jobs.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">In
his research, Tolgan found that todays job candidates often interview the company
as much as the company interviews them. New employees expect to be heard
and to make a difference right away. They expect to perform better and
when they do they expect to be rewarded quickly. The new workers, he said,
are more high energy and better performers but they are also high maintenance.
They need lots of attention, recognition and special handling. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><i>His
advise to managers in their tougher new jobs included the following five items:</i></font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>1.
Managers must know their people. </b>As individuals, each has their own
motivators and de-motivators.. Know their names, strengths, weaknesses,
potential and more.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>2.
Managers must document performance.</b> Write down accomplishments and
failures. Reward high performers and let low performers go.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>3.
Managers must <u>not</u> treat all employees the same</b>. The conventional
wisdom is that the fair thing to do is to treat all employees the same.
Not all employees give the same performance. Treat each one as an individual
and reward each based on their performance.</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>4.
Managers must hold employees accountable</b>. If after helping them to
improve their work they still cannot meet the companys standard of performance,
let them go. </font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><b>5.
Managers must get rid of low performers.</b></font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1">There
are several reasons you must do so:</font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-indent: -.25in; margin-left: .3in"> <font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif" size="-1"><span style="font-size: 14.0pt; font-family: Symbol"><span style="font:7.0pt "Times New Roman"">
</span></span>They are being paid for sub-par work and have become an expense</font></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" align="left"><font size="-1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">In
fact thats just what happened in the city of Santa Fe, New Mexico.
However, no complaints were filed because it was the city that did
it. The city passed a Living Wage law in order to raise the
wages of the lowest paid, least educated workers. Similar laws
in many cities and states have been passed raising the minimum wage
to over $11.00 per hour. Historically it has been suspected
that this results in the elimination of those low paid jobs.
Cutting lawns and baby-sitting jobs for neighborhood kids were pretty
much eliminated when the law required $5.00 per hour for such jobs.

<p class="MsoBodyText3" align="left"><font size="-1" face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">An
independent study conducted by Dr. Aaron Yelowitz of the University
of Kentucky showed that Santa Fes 65% increase in the minimum wage

almost all of those jobs were held by people with less than a high
school education. </font></p>

research also showed that low-skilled workers who kept their jobs
