bad it falls on a Sunday.

Yes its the annual Spring ahead and Fall back process we call
Daylight Saving Time (DST). And in
case you missed it, it happened on Sunday, April 1, at 2am.

Today, over 70 countries use DST. It
is not used in the tropics because the daylight hours remain approximately the
same year round.

Its a good concept that was originally designed for the days when we
were a farm economy. That action of
jumping ahead one hour effectively meant that farmers would gain an extra hour
of sunlight each evening. They might still get up in the dark, but the sun would
rise earlier and they could still be in sunshine for the longer workday into the
summer evening.

Still, people ask why we should have Daylight Saving Time (DST) today. We
no longer need that extra hour of sunlight.
We no longer work from sunrise to sunset during the summer.
What possible effect could DST have on us today?

Actually, Federal studies show that we save about 600,000 barrels of oil,
50 lives, 2,000 injuries and 28 million traffic accidents every year due to DST.
And, of course, you knew that Uncle Sam had to get some employment regs
into this issue. And he did!
Believe it or not there is one significant federal impact this has on
employers, the issue of overtime. Shift
workers working that night will normally work one hour less and many employers
will just pay them for the whole shift. The
idea is that although they may work one hour less this spring and get paid for
it, when DST recedes this fall on October 28th, theyll work one
hour more and not get paid for it.

Youre not required to do this. You
may pay for a 7-hour day now and pay for a 9-hour day then.
Many employers however merely pay the 8-hour shift for both days.
But theres the rub. Therell be overtime to pay next fall.
And you will have to pay it! The
Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) comes into play here.
Regardless of how many hours of work you pay an employee for, you
only have to pay overtime for the number of hours the employee worked!
So when you calculate overtime for either of those pay periods you need
only count the actual hours worked each week to calculate the overtime.
