This pair of engraved, openwork silver and coral fibulae from Kabylia in the Atlas Mountains of Northern Algeria was probably the work of a Jewish jeweler or silversmith. They would have been worn at the shoulders to hold a Kabyle woman’s woolen garment in place. While brooches of this shape were worn by many Berber people across Algeria and Morocco, jewelry from Kabylia is distinctive for the use of coral, which was easily obtained along the Mediterranean coast. By the end of the nineteenth century, manmade materials often replaced the coral in Kabyle jewelry. The round form of this pair—as opposed to the more common triangular fibulae—is somewhat unusual. With a western case, probably from the early 20th century, with a note in English, dated February 3rd (no year given), perhaps the date these were collected.
