Félix Aubert was a major proponent of marrying the fine and decorative arts, and a founding member of Groupe des Cinq and Groupe des Six, forerunners of the Art dans tout movement whose tenets included truth to materials and form following function in the luxe arts: "artistic honesty" as the members defined it at their first public exhibition of 1896. The Groupe des Six chose Iris d'Eau to cover the walls of the Galerie des Artistes Modernes in 1898. At the 1900 Exposition Universelle, Aubert exhibited a collection of his printed textiles produced by Scheurer, Lauth & Cie., including a design similar to the present cotton.
