1890-1970

The work of Alexandre Noll is that of a poet. This character appeared
in his first gouaches that he painted, still young, during his stay in
the Orient. He then knew to transcribe them with another means of expression:
wood.

First engravings, then marquetry, finding form in geometric bodies or
mythological inspiration. He then created objects and furniture in solid
wood which allied harmonies of volumes and rhythmed contours. Finally,
he carved his abstract sculptures which, voluted, powerfully rounded shapes,
and forms torn from nature, express all the puissance and sensuality of
his oeuvre.

Noll used blocks of wood from France, Africa, the Americas, and Japan, teak, rosewood, ebony, mahogany, but also elm, beech, and walnut; wood was for Noll a constant source of communion with nature. If Noll's passion for wood was absolute, his clever and experimental technique was that of old craftsmen, whose tools he adopted. Noll's technique was not that of a cabinetmaker, it remained empirical and experimental, throughout his objects, sculptures and furniture.
It was with objects that Noll made his first contact with the public. These objects, potential sculptures, defined by the artist's personality, objects with an unexpected character, would always impassion him: each with its own secret and particular life
