René Herbst:
1891-1982

Architect and interior designer, he fought to promote quality furniture
accessible to all throughout his life .

His art is characterized by its pared down character, rigorous conception,
simple volumes, true angles, flat surfaces, and refined choice of materials.

A pioneer of metal use in France, he foresaw the democratization of furniture
by creating works in series. By 1925, he had introduced nickel-plated steel
tubing in his furniture.

His precursor theories weren't accepted so he created most of his pieces
himself in small series.

He designed numerous shops like Puiforcat in 1936. He first exhibited at
the Salon d'Automne in 1921, and in 1925, as a jury member for the Exposition
des Arts décoratifs, he oversaw the installation of shops, both his and
others', on the Alexandre III bridge. His furniture is remarkably modern. At
the Pleyel piano showroom, he presented a mahogany and metal grand piano.

In 1929 René Herbst and fellow architect - designers founded the Union des
Artistes modernes. At the first U.A.M show in 1930, he presented the Pleyel
piano on the Alexandre III bridge. Between 1930 and 1932, he renovated the
Aga Khan's townhouse on rue Scheffer in Paris.

Numerous metal tube chairs were created during this period. For many the
seat backs and seats were made of simple "tendeurs". A chaise longue with
an adjustable chair back of telescoping tubes was created for the Maharadjah
of Indore. Finally, he created juxtaposable element furniture in chrome-plated
metal.

For the Exposition des Arts et Techniques in 1937 he participated in the
installation of the U.A.M. and Advertising pavilions. He became president
of the Union des Artistes modernes in 1946 after the death of Robert Mallet-Stevens.

In 1952, he furnished the restaurant Prunier on rue Duphot in Paris, and
in 1955 one in London.

In 1955 he published a book on his twenty years of experience with the U.A.M.
