    For the very first time a unique collection of prototypes, furniture, lamps and ceramics created by Ren Herbst is
presented to the public at our gallery in New York. The decorator-architect created this suite of furniture from 1930 to
the end of the forties, for his own apartment in Paris that remained intact until his death in 1982.
<br>
These unique pieces were acquired by the Galerie Maria de Beyrie in Paris from the estate of Ren Herbst. During his
lifetime, Maria de Beyrie earned his confidence and maintained a friendly relationship with Ren Herbst. In 1976, she was
the first to show his work in her Paris gallery in an exhibition entitled Meubles & Objets dArchitectes, dans les annes
1925.
<br>
Architect and decorator, Ren Herbst is an outstanding personality in the field of French creation.
<br>
His art is notable for its simplicity, the rigor of its conception, pure angles, simple volumes and the refinement of
materials and execution.
<br>
He was one of the first in France to use nickel-plated tubing in his furniture. This taste for bicycle-handlebar-furniture
 earns him the nickname Man of Steel.
<br>
Between 1921 and 1928, he participated in many shows in France and internationally. In 1925, he became a member of the jury
for the Decorative Arts Exhibition and, on the Alexandre III Bridge in Paris, created an installation of boutiques including
 his own. During the exhibition he showed his first modern furniture.
<br>
Disagreeing with the tendencies represented by the Socit des Artistes Dcorateurs, in 1930 he founded the Union des
Artistes Modernes (U.A.M.) with Robert Mallet-Stevens and Francis Jourdain among others. Upon the death of Robert
Mallet-Stevens, he became the president in 1946. This movement, whose fundamental influence one can appreciate today,
included many of the periods talents, such as Pierre Chareau, Eileen Gray, Le Corbusier, Fernand Lger, Charlotte Perriand,
 Jean Prouv, etc.
<br>
Top level celebrities commissioned his work. Herbst renovated the Prince Aga Kahns mansion, on rue Scheffer in Paris,
between 1930 and 1932. This commission is one of the most outstanding successes of the decorator.
<br>
Member of many juries, international exhibition curator, he was made Chevalier de la Lgion dHonneur, among other
official decorations.
<br>
As a man, Ren Herbst was a being of exception. A simple, modest, affectionate man who formed loyal friendships and remained
 faithful to his ideal without compromises until his death.
<br>
It is with great pride that, with this show, we aim to make Herbst better known in the USA.
