<a href="http://www.siena.edu" target="_blank">Siena College</a> ... 1987. A group of seniors interested in volunteering
for a year talk with the Sister in Campus Ministry. "Wonderful," she says, "here's information on the Jesuit Volunteer Corps."
"But," reply the students, "isn't there a volunteer program in which we could continue to learn about Franciscan spirituality?!
Somewhere we could continue what we began learning here at Siena?"

<p>
Their response is why the Franciscan Volunteer Ministry exists today.
</p>
<p>They were the first, living and serving in Boston, 1987-1988. In 1989, the <strong>Franciscan Volunteer Ministry</strong>
was incorporated, sponsored by the <a href="http://www.hnp.org" target="_blank">Holy Name Province</a>. The purpose: to
provide a setting for lay volunteers to grow in faith, love, & hope by serving the poor and marginalized, and working for social justice
through Franciscan ministries. The volunteers live in Gospel-based communities as a witness to their faith through prayer and a
simple lifestyle. Gifts and talents are exchanged with the people of God with a loving and joyful Franciscan spirit, always
being aware of how much we can learn from and are blessed by the poor and marginalized of the world.
</p>
<p>Today, we have at most 16 Franciscan Volunteer Ministers serving in Camden, NJ, Philadelphia, PA, and Silver Spring, MD. They
come from many states, schools, and experiences all united through their desire to love and serve with the poor and marginalized.
We (alums and current volunteers) would be thrilled to talk with you about our life with FVM, and answer any questions you may have about our
program or volunteer service in general. We pray that you continue to be blessed as you discern your next steps.
