<EM>A History of Watauga County, North Carolina</EM> states that Jesse Storie came from Pennsylvania, moved to Western North Carolina and settled on King's Creek and married Frances Bradley.  Jesse Storie, born in Virginia about 1768 is found in the 1850 Kings Creek, Caldwell, County, NC census record. By 1815 their sons Joshua and John Storie were living at what was known as the old Thomas Lenoir place.  <P>

In or about 1825, Joshua and John Storie,along with their wives' families moved to Ashe County, North Carolina, one settling at the William Gragg place and the other near Blowing Rock. The Storie's eventually settled at what is now known as Bailey's Creek, where Thomas H. Storie, son of Joshua was born.<P>

Some family members tried to enlist in the Federal Army, but could not get through the lines.  The homes of the Stories were open to the Federal soldiers and sympathizers, and the women of the families often waded the streams to carry food to outlyers, Bettie and Lucy once taking a wounded Yankee to Coffey's Gap in the night on an old horse, while on another occasion they hunted and found the body of a man named Hines, who had been killed by the Home Guard, and buried it decently.<P>
