He married Jane McDowell in 1770, probably in Lancaster, Co., PA, where he taught school and Jane was born September 5, 1750. John Brown served during the Revolutionary War at King's Mountain under Benjamin Cleveland.<P> Research shows Jane's father to be James McDowell of Little Britain Township, Lancaster County, PA. His will (Orphans Court Abstracts and Index 1740-1804, Misc Bk page 124, March 4, 1783) names John Brown and Jane, daughter of the deceased. James McDowell was born 4 Jan 1725, St Stephens Parish, Cecil Co., Maryland. His parents were William Mackdowell (spg) (born about 1704) and Ruth (Roberts), (born about 1705 and married about 1724 (Family Group Sheet, Church of Later Day Saints, AFN:1668-091). Jane's mother was Elizabeth Carmichael, daughter of Daniel Carmichael, also of Little Britain Township (Daniels will names James McDowell, son-in-law). Jane McDowell was also a sister to General Joseph McDowell and Major Charles McDowell, of Revolutionary fame.<P> John Brown settled in NC along the Yadkin River and is recorded in 1790 Heads of Family, Morgan District. According to DAR records he served at the Battle of Kings Mountain as Captain under Cleveland.
