Bartholomew Vawter is said to have come from Plymouth, England and born about 1665. It is not known when he arrived in the New World, but he died in Tappahannock, Essex County, Virginia, ca. 1717. He married Winifred Hodgson between 1689 and 1691 in Essex County. Winifred was the daughter of William and Onah Hodgson. <P>

This letter was discovered in the materials of Wm. Snyder Vawter (no date) but was after 1921. -- My father William J. Vawter was born in Rankin Co., Miss Nov 5, 1841, then as a small boy his father Lorenzo Dow Vawter and family moved to Texas, Nacogdoches, Co.� Nov 5, 1861 William J. Vawter, Thomas H. Vawter and John Vawter left Linn Flat, Texas for service.� William J. Vawter after the war returned home, John was killed by the Yankees, Thomas H. returned but later years died.� William J. Vawer married Annie Pogue, 5 children, Sallie, Dora, Elbert, James W. and Lorenzo Dow Vawter.� Annie Vauter died later years and William J. Vawter married Carry C. Holbrooks from Linn Flat Texas.� She had 3 children Julian, Mary C. and Ola Vawter (writer).� Carry C. Holbrooke Vawter was born in Rankin Co., MS May 24, 1846 she died May 12, 1921 at Cushing, Texas.� William J. Vawter was a mason and was a charter member of the Cushing Lodge when it was organized in 1905. and was elected its first treasurer and re-elected for 9 years.��His long life was one of usefulness a good man is gone, his end was and we know where to look for him.� He died Dec 17, 1916.� He was a member of the Methodist Church for 50 years. -- Signed Ola L.
